I'm debating between the DBAL-I2 and the CQBL.

The CQBL seems completely awesome but it doesn't have a low IR setting. I'll be shooting critters from 10 yards out to a couple hundred yards.

Is the bloom of the 0.7 mW CQBL going to be horrible at close range?

I can't speak from experience, but I would say yes. There would be blooming at close range. I would go with the dbal and possibly get the torch pro add on if you are going to be using long range illumination. It's our closest option to the military versions of pointers/illuminators. There has been a few people talking about an option that has a very high output led illuminator in the works. That's what I am waiting on.

I don't know why all IR laser units just don't just come with a quick bungee Filter Cover similar or like the peq15 units .
They are nice little option and you get No Bloom at all in close target or indoors with those tiny filter lens covers .
.

The laser doesn't tend to bloom as much when you use an IR illuminator with it. In fact, if you don't it can wash out the dot, depending on the illuminator and the laser.

You should also be able to adjust the gain a bit, particularly if it's too bright with the laser and illuminator.

.7mW is as low as I've ever needed, and usually about as high too, at least for shooting.
