I'm having a 308 built by AO as we speak. It should be ready in 3-4 weeks. I have access to 8lbs of 4064. I will be shooting 175smk out of a 23in barrel. Any reason not to pick this up and try it out?

Yup, 43 grains of it with a 175 SMK gives me almost 2700 with the 24" AI. I went into the 45+range, accurate but started getting a little bolt lift, nothing else. Had well over 2800 with that.

I am shooting 4064 out of my AO 308 with 168's with great results, should work fine with 175's.What brand and twist of barrel are you getting?

Not to derail the thread (and I know it has been covered before), but is the temperature sensitivity THAT big of a deal as far as IMR 4064 is concerned?

Well, that depends on how much temp variation is too much for you.

The first charts from Hodgon when Varget came out showed IMR 4064 with about half the velocity variation over the interval tested (0°-90°F???) of Win-748, which was still near-infinity more than the almost-zero variation with Varget. Specifically in .308 and using the 168 SMK. Now since your 20° F shots with Varget will STILL hit lower at 800 yards than they do at 100°F because of the different air density, I decided that sticking with a US-made powder and not being tied to cargo ship schedules was more important than getting near-identical velocities at all temperatures.

Then the powder and primer shortage hit and I could find 4064 twice as easily as Varget.

Then Obummer got re-elected and the next shortage hit...and both became Unobtanium for a while. A long while.

Not sure what I'm gonna do next. If I can get more bullets soon, I'll look at Varget again, but only because there was a promising load a while back and the 4064 loads seem to have sped up past my accuracy node...and mostly because here, Varget is showing up a tiny bit more often than 4064...

My AO build shoots groups like this with 4064.

Ive recently been working 4064 as well. Prior i was working ball powders such as 2000mr and Win 748 and Benchmark. Had a few retired F class members at my lgs recomend 4064 so i bought 2#. The good is that its an awesome conaistant powder and lesser priced compared to newer powder hybreds. Also readily available near me. The bad is 4064 is a long stick powder that does not meter well so you have to patiently trickle. My pet recipie is 168 smks , .020 jump, and about 42.4 gr. 4064. Still my 2000mr is my best performing powder but im not finished testing 4064 so its still work in progress.

Go for it Bro! That's one of the top powders to produce a real shooter there! " IMR4895 runs less pressure with the same velocity." If you ever get the chance I would pick some of that up to chrono. along with some BL-C(2). But, I tell you what though, I'm hearing super awesome things about CFE223!! Guys that know a lot more than me and shoot for a living have been using it in 308Win. in place of Varget with great results. They say their not going back to Varget in less they have to.

My goal is to not be affected by a specific brand powder shortage. I want to be able to buy a # off the shelf of whatever medium burn my LGS has in stock, go to my Excel database, get the numbers, dump the loads and shoot precise and consistant and NOT be limited to a single "goto powder". Right now I can load up 2000MR, Benchmark, Win 748 and all will produce around .9" groupings at 200 meters so I'm content with my powder "diversity" ;)
