does any one have any experience with using IMR 4831 in a .308 win. with a 180gr. bullet? ive read up to 46 gr. of powder but thats only from one source so i want to be sure its safe before i start working up the load.

In one of my notebooks I have written 45.0 to 48.0 But I'm sure that's a bit conservative. It also depends on what brass you're using.

4831 is too slow for a .308. You will get very low velocities. 4895 is much better suited for the .308, but start low and work up as always.

I think a compressed load might get you within 150 fps of a standard 4895 or 4064 load.

yeah the load i saw online said about 2225 fps at the muzzle and that was 46 gr. im using winchester brand brass and some old CCI #200 LR primers. also the load is for a 180gr. nosler partition (atleast 1800 fps for it to be effective) and 180gr. Barnes TSX (not exactly my first choice but hey thats what i get for living in California)
