Hey guys
I have used the same IMR 4064 powder for over 15yrs, it has been a really reliable powder and has been used by Federal in their Gold Medal Line since I can remember.
They came out with a relatively new powder IMR 8208 which is suppose to be really temp insensitive, proabably close to that of Varget. I loaded up 10rds of my usual powder charges that I use with 4064 to run through the chronograph.
Got to the range yesterday and set up the 300yd targets, I didn't have my usual 3" diamonds so I put up 7" diamonds and just aimed at the 6 o clock apex of the diamond.
I only got 5rds through the chrono before it shut down on me (been having problems with it) so I just shot on paper to see what kind of groups I would get.
10 rounds of each powder charge
LC LR brass sized with redding bushing dies .336 neck
Fed 210m primers
41.8gr 8208
175smk @ 2.80"
Ohler 35 chrono at 10ft.
Gave me a ave velocity of 2651fps and SD of 11 for 6 shots, then the chrono shit on me for the next increment of 42.2gr
I increased the increments to 42.2 and 42.7gr
Temp 59 degrees
Baro 30.04
Humidity 64%
Wind 8 to 12 from 3 o clock
I only got a decent grouping with the 42.7 for 10 shots on paper, wind was pretty bad and I did not come up enough from when I shot the 42.2gr load in between the two paper targets I had posted on the backer.
42.7 of IMR8208
I also used my usual load which is 42.2gr of 4064 and shot 10 shots as a comparison, wind was not as bad for this group. I made a sight adjustment since I only saw 1 of the six shots I had made, I didn't know the other five were in the black of the diamond.
There are 3 additional handgun rounds on this target, 2 at the top left and one at the edge bottom right, my Sgt decided that he wanted to see if he could hit my target at 300yds with his handgun? He did, those are .40cal rounds from a glock 22 at 300yds!
I plan on testing this more as winter hits and it gets colder, and hopefully get my chrono working again so I can compare the muzzle velocity when it gets colder plus accuracy.
