According to the article, they were in a single engine plane piloted by someone else named Sachs, but who knows. It also reported:

“The local news website Searchlight reported that Sachs owned a dive business in Bequia and last radioed the airport’s control tower to inform them that he was experiencing difficulties and was turning around.”

My guess is they had engine trouble shortly after takeoff and the pilot lost SA while attempting to turn back towards the airport, got too slow in a steep turn, and spun in from a unrecoverable altitude.
