Is 20moa really needed for an AR10?

Look for whats gona hold my scope. Most likely Badger rings as I won't really need to QD the scope for anything. But unlike the Bolt guns there are not many 20moa setups out there for the AR flat-tops. I think Night Force make one...But I will be setting this up for max 800yds and yeah I'll shoot it farther if my scope will track that fare with out the 20moa base but don't really care I do care about whats 800yds and closer. Also I plan on Running Mil-Mil so I shouldn't need the 20moa.. I don't know what do you think.

I like having it, its always fun to push your gun farther then you think it will go. i don't currently have one on my ar10 but it will be getting a spuhr or larue here shortly

Got to agree with Big Joe on this one. It is nice to have it if you need it. It also matters on what scope you get and how much elevation travel does it have. If it is light on elevation than you may need it but if you have 110 MOA of travel than probably not.

Depends on what scope you get. 100 MOA of travel should guarantee you enough adjustments to get a .308 to 1000 yards. My SS10x42M has 128 MOA of total elevation travel. I have a canted base (20 MOA) on my rifle in case I ever upgrade, but it's really not needed at all.

It all comes down to which scope you ultimately select (which will have x-amount of internal elevation adjustment) and whether, once you have the rifle zeroed at whatever range you intend on zeroing it, you have enough elevation adjustment to get you out to the ranges you want to shoot.

If you like Badger Ordnance rings, take a look at their 22MOA AR riser rail. It is not QD and bolts solidly to the upper receiver rail. Then, just select which ever rings (in combination with the height of the riser rail) that give you the proper height for you/your setup. The NF unimounts are also very nice options but it sounds like you already knew of that as a possibility.

Finally, as for you "running Mil-Mil" goes...Mil or MOA has ZERO to do with whether or not you need a canted (20MOA or otherwise) scope base. 20MOA equates to roughly just under 5.8Mils so just think of a 20MOA base as a 5.8Mil base when you are looking around. If your scope is limited in internal adjustment available to you for dialing in at extended ranges, then you may want the additional elevation a canted base will afford you. I always tend to stay on the side of caution and live by the old addage of "it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!"

Very good info... thanks Guys! I will look into the Badger riser rail. Scopes going to be a Night Force so I'll use there rings as well. I say that but hell I'll change my mind like 20 times before I buy. No more than a 3.5x15 and most likely the 2.8x10x32 NightForce. And Yeah the MIL/MIL or MOA whatever will get the job done and I would like a scope with at least 110MOA of travel, my zero will be 100yds as most things I shoot at here are close anyways.

Both of those scopes have tons of internal adjustment you won't need a canted base.

i didn't have one on my AR-10, and i couldn't get enough up with my NXS 5.5-22X56 (to get to 1K), so i got a NF unimount, if you are only going to 800, u don't need it... BUT, once u hit 8, then its 9, and 1K... you get the idea... IMHO get the 20moa you will be glad.

i know you wont need one with the 3.5-15. at 1k i have elevation to spare and thats at sea level. dont sweat it, that badger riser is ugly and unnecessary.

With the nightforce optic,

go with their low rings and the Bad Ord 22 MOA rail.

It will fit you just fine.
