If Colt is sub-contracting out pretty much the entire rifle, is it still a Colt just because they assemble those parts? When does it not become something the fanbois drool over and pay a premium for?

If Colt bought all the parts from PSA yet assembled it in the Colt factory would it be PSA crap or a "genuine" Colt product?

Colt has played this game before. There is a 3rd generation black powder that falls into the commerative series. It was sub contracted out but wears colt proofs, patent marks and was authorized by colt. The purists will say no it is not. Depending on who answers your question at Colt, they will say it’s not a true colt. Some others there might say, well it was officially authorized and blessed by colt, as well as wears colt markings without being sued for trademark infringement so it must be a colt. The truth is in the eye of the beer holder I guess

Interestingly, the Colts of that period weren't considered the best of all the makers. Remington-Rand's were considered the highest quality of the WWII contract 1911s. They also made more than double the amount that Colt did.

I wouldn't buy a psa or a colt. I'd build one. I'm not for or against colt, I'm just indifferent as to whether or not all components were made in house. If a manufacturer can improve the quality of the final product product and keep costs down (ideally passing those savings on to the consumer) I'm all for it.

If the product offers exceptional value and the manufacturer stands by it sub away. I do prefer entirely made in the USA though.

I made a deal with my wife... she could name our son Colton if I could build him a Colt 1911 for his 18th bday. Made out like a bandit in that deal. I'm still leaning towards a series 70 frame though. Entirely aftermarket including a caspian slide.

Only recent Colt 1911 I've shot extensively is a Delta Elite in 10mm. No complaints. Kind of wish I owned it since 10mm is the only ammo I can get consistently in these parts.

You are confusing collect-ability due to rareness with quality. Singers were the rarest with only 500 being made, Union Switch did 50K. RR made 900K.

You sure? I was under the impression that singer stopped producing 1911s after the first batch and instead moved to aviation components because of the exceptional quality of the finished product. It was a more lucrative contract and Washington saw the benefit as well.

How ever Colt took out sourcing to a new level in order to control cost associated with their union workers. When they did this they killed moral with there employees and failed at managing any form of quality control.

Interesting stuff. I wouldn't mind getting behind an example of each, but that's a tall order nowadays.

The colt I have came from my grandfathers neighbor. They were both WW2 vets and the neighbor wasn't the same when he came back. The neighbor wouldn't open up to anyone else and when he passed away, his wife gave my grandpa the 1911 and a treasure trove of other WW2 relics. Grandpa shot cast wadcutter handloads through it regularly until he died. I still have some of those rounds.

It's not a pistol my grandpa carried in the war, but it's still a family heirloom. Quality-wise, I can't tell the difference between it and a RIA, but to me it's still worth its weight in gold and then some.

Sad to see what happened to Colt. Looks like the same will happen to Remington.

Yep despite not having the Pony on its side, the M16A1 made by the Hydro-matic Division of GM Corp I was issued in 1978 did everything the Colts around it did. Mil-spec is mil-spec and the roll mark gets you nothing over that.

I also have always heard about 70's Series Gold Cups. ( I was originally a single stack 1911 guy.) I have an 80s Series Gold Cup that I started modifying with Wilson Combat stuff before they got insane with prices. That is my last single stack I own.

I guess, now, I am a Sig sortta guy. Whatever. After the DA/SA trigger adjustment, my first Sig 220 was dead nuts out of the box. Obviously it felt "fat" in my hand, but that thing rocked.

i did pick up a python about 12 years ago. shot it side by side with my 586 smith. didnt go as i expected.....dumped the colt for a nice profit and kept the vastly superior (in every way) 586. other than resale price, i’ve yet to be wowed by colt.

BCM is one of those companies but your full of shit if you think they cost alot less. The cheapest factory BCM gun goes for around $1300, you can save some by buying a upper and lower separate and avoiding the FET.

Which you can also do with colt. I put together 11.5" Pistols with everything factory colt except for the trigger and brace (lower depending on how much I want to pay for a pony) for around $1000.

My last batch of colt uppers was $499 each, throw in a $30 colt CH and $100 Colt BCG.

There is a reason true firearms experts respect Colt AR's. They have been the gold standard since the beginning and even today with other good options out there, they are a good for the money they cost (Pre-covid crazy).

Show me a better AR than a Colt 6720 or 6920 for $800. You need to step up to BCM/DD/LMT to even get something comparable, at a much greater cost.

Another thing is we know BCM/DD/LMT will be in business 10 years from now. Colt has filed for bankruptcy how many times now? It is only a matter of time the creditors give up and pull the plug. And either someone will buy the trademarks, or Colt goes away. Of the three things Colt has going for it: SAAs, 1911s, and ARs; none of them are really Colt exclusives. Others are making those items, and what makes Colts worth more than Ruger, Kimber, or BCM? People I know who shoot cowboy events own Colts for prestige, but use their Ruger or Uberti's in shooting events. And the last time I compared Colt's 1911's to Kimber and Springfield, yeah, the pony was the only thing Colt had the the other two didn't. And the Kimber ran circles around the Colt in quality.

I am glad Freedom Group finally gave up on Remington and the other properties. It is sad how fast those vultures destroyed Remington, Marlin, and the other brands under their umbrella. And I do hope the new owners can bring those brands back. I just hope Colt can get new management fast that can bring the brand into the 21st century. Shooting expert with ragged out rattle trap m16a1 overstamped h&r or colt a2s is easy unless you cant shoot.

A colt m16a2 is probally the most reliable AR15 varient ever made. It takes a significant parts failure or absolute dissreguard for any semblance of maintaince to redline one. The system is unbelievably forgiving.

You keep saying Colt is better, but you never said why...

You say more reliable, but in what way, under what circumstances? What data are you referencing to back that up?

Which parts exactly in a Colt, break less than any other quality made brand an why?

You say more accurate, but exactly how are you defining that?

Are there NO other brands that match the accuracy of a Colt at ANY distance, with ANY ammo?

Do those shooting teams you speak of use NOTHING but Colt?

Do they shoot them as received from the factory, or are they modified in certain ways?

The acceptance standard for the military is 4moa. If these are so accurate, why is the standard so low?

My M16A4 for may Iraqi trip was fresh from the factory, still covered in cosmoline, and made by FN. It was a great shooter. I was beyond pissed when our spec ops wannabe OpsO convinced our team lead we needed M4s because that is what spec ops uses. The Colt M4 was good too, but I preferred the M16A4.
