Waiting for your succinct comments, Mike.

Florida football coach Will Muschamp doesn't even try to pretend that he hasn't patterned his football philosophy around much of what he learned from Alabama's Nick Saban while an assistant in both the college and NFL levels.

And why not? Alabama has won national titles by focusing a lot on being physical, pounding the ball down other teams' throats when possible. Muschamp tried that his first season in 2011, and finished 7-6. Last year, with Tim Davis arriving as the offensive line coach, he made a second attempt. This time, the Gators went 11-2.

So Davis made an appearance Tuesday at a Space Coast Gator Club gathering in Melbourne, Fla., and he made another vow.

To keep on pounding.

"Will's got a plan,'' promised Davis, also a former Saban assistant. "Will coached under the devil himself for seven years. I only did three.''

And Saban, referred to as "Nicky Satan'' by Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin, among others, loves to pound the rock. Davis reflected that same warm, fuzzy feeling when speaking to the local group.

"Why go by plane,'' said Davis to the gathering, "when you can go by train.''

Davis' story is as interesting as the potential season ahead brings, with players reporting for the start of preseason practice Aug. 1. He's been around, to put it bluntly.

He played college ball at Utah, in the CFL at Hamilton and in the USFL with the Los Angeles Express (the year before Steve Young came aboard).

His coaching career took him to Wisconsin, Arizona, Southern California, the Miami Dolphins, Alabama, Minnesota, Utah and now Florida.

There was even a stop at Walla Walla, Wash., in there.

Florida, of course, isn't Walla Walla. But the game is the same. You win up front, you probably win the game. It's an attitude that has a lot of trophies sitting in Alabama right now and a lot of Crimson Tide linemen preparing for NFL camps. Pound the ball. Open the holes. Dominate up front.

Davis puts the pressure on himself, on his front. If he wins his personal battle, it could be a huge season at Florida. And he knows it. But then, Davis explained, he knows a little bit about personal pressure.

Handed a microphone to talk to the crowd but having trouble getting it to work — and not necessary as loudly as he talked — he handed it back and said, "See. I don't need this. We grew up Irish Catholic. You should see my family. Seven kids around the table, there I sat. There were seven kids, two parents and a dog. There were nine pork chops. I got some of the pork chop.''

Davis predicted that Florida will eat well in the future — and win a national championship with Muschamp as the head coach.

"He's like the other guy,'' said Davis, again making comparisons to Saban. "But he's got a personality.''

Continued hype of the SEC's most over rated team, Florida will continue to be a disappointment while the fans act like they have ever been anything but a flash in the pan. Only three national championships since 1905 isn't anything to brag about.

You obviously haven't been keeping up with this rivalry over the past 20 years. The Gators have won 15 of the games. No UGA coach has had a winning record vs UF since Vince Dooley. During the same span, the Gators have won three national championships while the 'Dawgs haven't even played for one (and won't as long as Richt is there).

Mike, you're right, the Gators are Johnny Come Lately's and their fans act like "New Money". Hell, tnever even won an SEC championship until Spurrier came back to coach. That said, they've flat out owned the 'Dawgs since 1990.

True story....so the Devil came down to Baton Rouge for his first season. There I am at the spring game....sittin on a nice comfy padded seat in Tiger Stadium, in the shade, wearing shorts and a t-shirt....and sweating my nads off!

Hot? The word Hot dont even begin to describe it. The Asphault was running down the street like a river.

So out comes our new coach...wearing a camel hair blazer and black wool pants....OMG we all say, were going to loose him before the season even starts.

That Dude strutted out in the hot sun the whole game and didnt sweat a drop. Never saw him run his hand across his forehead not one time.

I know nick saban and his family personally and they are great people that do care about other people. Nick is not at all like the perception u see on tv or the media. I have done work for them pretty much ever since they have been in Tuscaloosa. I've taken their son fishing, worked on their house in Georgia and spent some time with them. How many people will pay u more than their bill states, they will. I was talking to them one day about buying a green egg grill one day just asking about the one they had and lo and behold the next week a big truck pulled in my drive and unloaded one with the coal and everything. Now does that sound like the devil , I don't think so. They do countless things for the university, the community, and all over the state. Nick loves kids and people. One thing nick is , he is very focused , consistent, and motivated to be the best in all he does. He simply out works his competition and they want to make dumbass statements because their to damn lazy to put in the effort and time like he does. He may seem for off to people in certain arenas because he don't have time to shake everybody's hand or talk to everybody . If he did that with his stature he couldn't do the job he's doing. Most all successful people get slandered and most of it is one word"jeolousy"! I hope they keep sticking their foot in their mouth and showing their stupidity because that will only keep helping " nick saban! Roll tide and yes we have it rolling!!

I'm not defensive about it, I just thought someone ,me actually knows the man and thought I would let some people know what he's really like. I also like smack talk for that's what makes it fun. Not a Alabama fan but I am an SEC fan. So that means I do cheer for them playing out of conference teams. What Bama did to LSU in the championship game a couple of years ago was awe inspiring. Notre Dame was very overrated. That was "beating up the retarded kid". Saban called off the dogs or it would have been uglier than it was. I was convinced that BCS officials slipped him some cash sometime during the first quarter and then had to slip him some more in the second half to pull the second string. They were afraid everyone would change the channel after the first half and the sponsors would be pissed. I bet it is hard to sell commercial time during the second half of Bama games. Hell the game is almost always over by the end of the first half.

For teenage college kids his antics work to push them around but in the rich cry baby NFL union players, he sucked or could not adapt.

One play and one player last year put Bama in the national championship Vs LSU and even after Big 12 Johnny football dismantled Bama defense that should have kept them out but the love for the SEC is alive and well. The only more love is USC (Kommiefornia not Carolina) and Ohio State and it already determined Ohio State will be in the national championship this season.

That was just pure wrong what the BCS did to LSU Vs Bama, that game should not have happened. For all you Bama lovers, that game was just like your game against Utah, did want to play Utah and Bama sucked and got beat up. Why would LSU want to play a team they already beat on the road. You could see it for pregame, LSU looked unprepared or why am I here, should be playing OSU.

But its college D1 football where the best team rarely wins the championship, its whom they want to see for the almighty dollar and its just gotten worse.

I would like to see every conference have a championship, those winners go into a hat, by blind luck of the draw/seating you play who you play bracket.

I'm from Baton Rouge and I send this message from 1/2 mile off of LSU's campus.

Saban is hated here for leaving. He is reviled for coaching in the SEC. He is recognized as being perhaps the best coach in the NCAA.

I think he's a better coach than Les Miles. Well, at least his Offensive Coordinators have a damned clue. LSU has lacked nothing on Defense and Saban was whipped on the field against LSU last season. Can't win them all.

Say what you will the man attracts talent - both on the sideline, press box and on the field.

Not sure we saw the same LSU Vs Bama game last year. As I remember, another tight game, LSU scored late and took the lead, I was cheering, not much time left, LSU had Bama 3rd and long but a LSU DB read his key wrong, was out of position and the Y receiver went big down field that sat up the game winning score for Bama. One play or one player lost a tight game.

Love the mad hatter but his soccer style game plan, play not lose has cost LSU both in wins and recruiting. Got to be aggressive sometimes to play to win. Pounding up the A and B gap, throw a monster ball down field exactly when the D expects it, punt, let the D take over works but you still have to game plan for your opponent, not just run the same game plan and when its not working, adjust so it does work. This is what Saban is good at, good game plan then change it up so the other teams change does not work. Another great coach at this is Peterson from Boise State, give both of them time and they can game plan against anybody then change it up to keep the other team off balance. Some times it not about talent but the game plan.

I understand Miles has hired a completely new O coordinator who likes edge speed with miss direction throttle wide open, should be interesting!!

On TV again, a prior Big 12 team from Texas built to win in the Big 12 walked all over Bama in Tuscaloosa by some kid nicked name Johnny Football, so now A&M is in the SEC but built to win in the Big 12 but now they are SEC so its called a better loss to A&M than a Big 12 loss, A&M had a better win record in the almighty SEC than they did in the Big 12.

Last year, watching TV I think Bama was losing again to LSU but some frosh got lost reading his key and Bama won.

I for some reason watching TV ESPN, all the writers and commentators say Ohio State was the best team last year and already crowned them national champions this year.

Bowl games and the national championship are all about the most money not the best teams or match up. Until there is a bracket like basketball, national championship means little to who is the best team....SEC excluded!

The game last year had Alabama struggling mightily. LSU THOROUGHLY dominated the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters. Alabama had 7 straight 3 and outs and if I recall correctly they did not have a first down in the third quarter.

The "trick plays" by LSU didn't help; they "didn't work". Well, they kept Bama honest but LSU dominated all but a quarter's worth of football. The screen play for the win was the perfect call for an extremely fast, aggressive defense but it was play calling/execution error that put LSU where they were. I despise what Miles has done to the offense and those who know know that he imprints HIS WILL on the OC. I could call plays better than LSU has. Let me state it differently: the offensive prep/gameplan and play calling has cost them several National Championship bids and it has taken a toll on recruiting - especially at QB and WR.

I believe you are much more cynical than I. Although both of us are just stating our opinions, I believe mine is more objective. I am not SEC born and raised, I am a Pac-10 transplant so I don’t drink the Bama or SEC Kook-Aid without sniffing it first.

You are correct, never played or coached a single game even though somewhere in the house I seen a trophy or two, a signed shirt by a football team to coach.

But on TV, I saw Utah beat up Bama in a bowl game, think it was on sports center too. Who was the best team, the score says Utah but Bama says they did not play their best game.

The 2008 season. I don’t understand what Bama’s loss has to do with anything? I think where you’re coming from is perhaps you feel Bama fans make an excuse for them to (what they feel) is an inferior team? Bama loss, fair and square. Did they play their best? I don’t think so by looking at the regular season scores. The difference is I know UTAH is a great team and their bowl victory wasn’t a fluke. But again, it was four years ago so I’m trying to understand the relevance.

Let’s be honest. OSU lost to a mediocre team. Not a good team, not a ranked team, a mediocre team. There is no excuse that they were playing under “duress” what was their “duress? And don’t tell me it was ISU’s huge crowed either. It was a bad loss to a mediocre team plain and simple. OSU has a history of choking and they just did it again. Look at the schedules around this infamous season. Alabama loss to the #1 team in the country. Sure, they lost at home, to the #1 team in the country and to a known powerhouse.

To all the bama haters, just keep on hating , nick is fueled by that. He still sees himself as the underdog and that amazes me. Nick actually don't understand why people look up to him the way they do. He's not god, nor the devil, he's just one hell of a college football coach who's very intelligent and simply out works people. I grew up in the shadows of Bryant Denny stadium when the bear was king.I think nick is just as good as he was although they do it in a different way. I've had the opportunity with my athletic career to be around some of the best in the business and I will tell you I've never been around a guy that's focused as he is. He don't look in the past or the future, he just looks at now and what he can do to be better the next minute. I truly can't say that I've ever met anybody like that. I know that there are other good coaches with great programs as well . Pretty much the top 8 teams in the sec have great programs as well as coaches. It's a dogfight every Saturday in the sec and believe me nick preaches it. It's all about what your doing now, not what you have done in the past. This year will be a new year with new challenges and we will have to wait and see what happens . The tide may not win it all again but you can bet we will be in the hunt. As a tide fan that's all u can hope for!

Bama played at home with good love and the rematch would bring most money into NCAA pockets to include the SEC pocket. Championship game, Bama wanted revenge because they lost at home against a better team, LSU wanted to play some other than a team they already beat on the road, happens to be OSU, OSU who? that wont bring much money into NCAA or SEC.

If I’m LSU and beat Bama on the road there are questions throughout the entire NCAA that it was a fluke. So why would I want to play OSU when I could put an exclamation point on my Bama victory? Think about it, LSU beat Bama at home and now has the opportunity to beat Saban and Bama again completely showing without a shadow of a doubt LSU’s superiority. Instead, if they play OSU and probably beat OSU, the question on everyone’s mind would be why were they afraid to play Bama again? Sure did money play a roll? And most sports fan agree whether they know anything or not but the money makers and SEC did not. Who was the best team, score says Bama but the score also says Utah was better, so, we now have LSU with a win and Bama with a win but Bamas win means more due to the all the money.

On TV again, a prior Big 12 team from Texas built to win in the Big 12 walked all over Bama in Tuscaloosa by some kid nicked name Johnny Football, so now A&M is in the SEC but built to win in the Big 12 but now they are SEC so its called a better loss to A&M than a Big 12 loss, A&M had a better win record in the almighty SEC than they did in the Big 12.

What difference does A&M make? They beat Alabama, good on them. But they lost to Florida and LSU. You know what that means? It means they had a two loss season and they’re not playing for a National Championship.

Last year, watching TV I think Bama was losing again to LSU but some frosh got lost reading his key and Bama won.

They were losing right up to the point where the game was over and they had the higher score. It’s all about the “W”, not the play.

I for some reason watching TV ESPN, all the writers and commentators say Ohio State was the best team last year and already crowned them national champions this year.

Well, last time I checked OSU was on probation so their victories didn’t mean shit. And we shall see about this year.

The play off will be 4 teams selected again by whom the match makers want the 4 teams to be, not a bracket system like D2 to get to the national champ. D1 all about huge money.

If Alabama loses to a shitty team like ISU I guarantee they don’t play LSU for a NC. Bama lost to the #1 team in the nation by a field goal in OT (BTW, only allowing them to get FG’s) OSU lost to a mediocre at best team by 6 in OT STILL allowing their opponent to score 37 points. There is NO WAY that is an equal comparison. And if they’re under so much “duress” at the death of a player why didn’t they go out and “win won for the gipper”? You can’t be completely cynical about it. There isn’t going to be “match makers” picking the four teams they want to play. There still has to be justification of any particular team being there. You’re not going to get a .600 team vying for a NC.

I am not a Bama fan but understand he is a great coach and one of the best to game plan and then make changes. Lots of talent too.

I only bring up the Utah Bama game because all the Bama fans I know say they did not play their best game, had a down game but will say LSU no way had a bad game, I beg to differ being around football for a few years as coach, its hard to beat someone twice in a season especially rivals and sometimes you want to play someone else and the coaching and players just do not give their best. It’s never going to happen and it’s in no way a “farce”. You cannot say that the winners of the NC since the inception of the BCS (with rare exception) wasn’t the true national champion. And let’s be honest, D2 isn’t really a good example because no one except those in D2 care about it.

Why you even mention pro sports is questionable. We’re not going to discuss how a team that has NOTHING ELSE TO DO runs their sport. And no other college sport with the exception of rugby (an no, hockey doesn’t count) has the physicality of football.

No one would argue that money isn’t important but it’s by far not the only or top factor. It is much more than “a select few opinion”. Selection committees are a small part of who plays and what you seem to forget is regardless of who they “want” to play, teams still have to go out and win games. Every person on the selection committee can want Nebraska to play in the NC but if Nebraska is 6-5 then you can guarantee they will not.

Not really. Again, the committees cannot override the computers. And let’s touch on the “committees”. There are two main ones. 115 sports writers, players and “experts” known as the Harris Poll. Then there is the 59 member coaches poll. After this is the BCS computer itself. So to claim that ALL 174 people are all going to agree on who should play in the NC is ridiculous.
But, there is so much money at stake with bowl games for individual conferences and programs, that process of a play off has been squelched for quite sometime. And we have a 4 team play off but just who selects those teams? My point is, take all conference winners place them for a bracket play off. Not a conference winner, not avail for the play offs.
Here’s why that will never happen. There are[FONT=&amp] 6 conferences in the BCS that have guaranteed spots in the 4 BCS bowls at the end of the season. They are the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, Pac 10, and the SEC. Everyone else is like the JV for a reason. So even if we went to a complete playoff system it’s still only going to consist of 6 teams. And where do the records stand? Why should three teams with losses get the right to play with three undefeated teams when the conferences weigh the same? The only reason people cry for a playoff is when there is more than two undefeated teams. No one cares that Boise State went undefeated when they play in a weak conference. Sure, they’ll throw a win against a ranked team, but how many times do they do that? What about the rest of the little no name schools they played for the rest of the year?[/FONT]

This is where you and I will disagree. As a former player in what is now a major BCS conference and a very short stint beyond college, I couldn’t even fathom not wanting to play someone again, especially if I beat them once already. And I can’t fathom ever not wanting to play my best no matter what. Maybe that’s the difference in the higher level, maturity or I don’t know but if I was a coach and I saw a kid not giving his all, he’d never play for me again.
I don’t think you can count on more than one hand the number of controversies where the human factor really played a roll in the decision of who played in the NC.

LoL, this thread is funny. The good part is it shows the passion that exists for college sports. I'm a fan but having played D1, I'm objective and recognize the reality associated with wins and losses. It really boils down to "who is the better team that day" Did I like seeing LSU play a terrible game and getting trashed by Bama!! NO.

But the reality is that on the NC game day, there was no doubt who the better team was. That includes players and coach!!! One team showed up prepared to win the NC, and the other didn't.

There are no excuses as to " who wanted to play who" or "who didn't want to be there" It's the National Championship!!!, and if you aren't prepared to engage you deserve to have your asses handed to you and that's exactly what happened.

And if anyone really and truly believes that Alabama and LSU weren't the 2 Best teams in the country, then there is not much I can do or say to help you.

I agree with dagsta, sports performance includes lots of variables. I have to believe lsu had some internal team issues at that time, at least that was the rumor. I honestly thought before that game lsu may beat alabama. They were the only team that year that I thought could put as many quality athletes on the field. People that want to compare their respective teams need to look at the last couple of nfl drafts. If that don't answer your questions then your not going to have them answered. The championship is supposed to be the best two teams in NCAA and they most definitely were on that day! Last year it wasn't for notredame shouldn't have been there, quite obvious.
