Is savage mkII to a ruger 77/22 a step up?

I have a savage mkII, SSS stock, bolt knob, 20 moa rail and im looking for something different that doesnt feel quite so cheap. I like the look and feel of the 77/22 and the magazine system but my savage is a tack driver and i dont know if the ruger can duplicate it. opinions? or take the jump to a 40x for alot more

77/22 is WAY better than the salvage. the 40x is ,well, a 40x which is top shelf.the ruger has ten+ round capacity. the 40x is single shot or five round.

That's why you will always see at least one 77/22 in every Sniper's Hide monthly 100yd - 300yd match. (usually in the top 3 finishers). Oh, wait - that's a "Salvage". Yeah the same company that doesn't spawn a whole new aftermarket industry to cover-up it's short comings. - And comes stock with a trigger you can only dream about with a Ruger.

personally, i like like ruger. i like the way they look, the way they are built, and the way they feel.

however i have not known too many ruger rifles (centerfire away) to be inherently as accurate as the savages, rimfires may be another case, i really don't have any 77/22 experience. i can be dead wrong though, just going off what i know of the centerfires.

if you have the $ and willingness to get the 40x, i would go that route.

something in between with another "good feeling" rimfire would be the CZ's. i can vouch for their accuracy, feel, looks, and they have more trinkets / upgrades available for around the same price as the ruger. just a thought.

i believe that the ruger is a step up in looks and craftsmanship (machining, wood, mechanicals) but i can't honestly say in accuracy as i honestly don't have experience with one.

It all depends, I had a 77/22 heavey barrel that would not shoot better than 4" at 100 with any of 10 diffrent types of ammo I tried. So the answer is that if you get a good one it is better, otherwise its not. You may have to spend some money to get it to shoot. I'm really liking a CZ452 I recenly bought, but that is only because I got one that shoots well.

All Rugers are great for hunting. The 10/22 can be put together, with aftermarket parts, to be a great tactical trainer. The new SR-556 is an incredible rifle for the money; they really put it together properly. But, whether you're talking center-fire or rim-fire bolt rifles, the Ruger will not be as accurate as the Savage.

I've had two Ruger 77/22, but I've only had one Savage. Both of the Rugers are gone. I still have the MKII, and shoot it as often as I can.

For what it's worth, I also sold my Ruger 77 in .300 SAUM, and picked up a Remington 700 in 7MM-RM.

Better out of the box, and better aftermarket parts.

If you're stepping up, then step up to a 40X. The 77/22 would be a step down.

i do like the accutrigger on the savage.i dont care for the bolt(shape/angle).i also dont care for the mag release,it is a FLIMSY piece of sheet metal and is in a stupid spot(poor ergonomics). go see them feel them,etc. 4" groups on a .22 @100yds i would have sent it back to the factory or had it recrowned on my own dime. whats your budget?

I think the only thing the Ruger has going for it is the easy aftermarket barrels and magazines that swap with the 10/22. Then again, the Savage probably doesn't need an extra barrel, but if it did there are docs on using a 10/22 or 77/22 barrel...

Esthetically, given your comments, probably yes. Functionally, maybe less so.

IMHO, beauty is as beauty does. By that criterion, my MKII is pretty nice.

For me, the thing about the .22LR is how it goes about its business with a minimum of fuss and muss. Other factors come later in the sequence of priorities.

I have a 77/22 and 77/17. They shoot very good...I like the rotary mag but as stated above the first thing I did with both is a trigger kit. I think it is a sideways move from Savage to Ruger. Both well made for what they are and the $...both shoot good. If you want a change the only thing would be move up to Kimber, 40X, Anshutz, etc. I think the Rugers are prettier than the Savage but as far as accurately shooting I think they are the same.

I don't own a Savage, but the MKII has quite a good reputation with folks at rimfirecentral, and the problem seems to be maintaining the proper tension on the action screws. Properly tuned, they'll run with the big boys. One seldom hears the same about a stock Ruger.

Don't own a savage but my 77/22 can shoot dime size groups at 100yards. Most of the time its quarter size groups cause I am lazy and out of practice as of late. I have done extensive work to it but the action, trigger, and barrel are all stock, it is the All weather version that has a varmint barrel.
