Re: Is there anything to shoot in Socal?

My buddies and I did some hunting when we were stationed on Camp Pendleton, a bit north of San Diego.

I know there was some hunting avail off-base. Deer, doves, some waterfowl. Supposed to be some wild hogs too, but never hunted them in So Cal.

Re: Is there anything to shoot in Socal?

There is supposed to be some deer and pig hunting around the Palomar Mountain area. I have seen deer up around Julian and even several dead on the side of I5 through La Jolla. There is a game preserve in Torrey Pines and they wander off from time to time. I saw a doe running up a hill where the 5 and 805 split.

There is supposed to be some fairly decent deer hunting in the mountains around San Bernardino too. I have seen deer in the hills between Orange County and Riverside.

There are deer everywhere in Malibu canyon and up around the Griffith Observatory and even around the Hollywood Bowl.

There are deer all through the Grapevine (mountains between LA and Bakersfield) as well. The Tejon Ranch is up that way and has deer, pig, and elk. They charge an arm and a leg to hunt though.

There are coyotes everywhere even in heavily populated areas.

There are also desert big horn sheep in the mountains outside of SD, but good luck getting drawn for a tag.

I have heard that Camp Pendleton has deer hunting but you have to be military or be family of military to hunt there.

I hope that helps.

Re: Is there anything to shoot in Socal?

Yeah if you are military then Camp Pendleton is great.
Where are you at in SoCal? There is game everywhere if you know how to find them. Lots of small game and birds if you are into that. Depending where you go, there are Pigs and Bears too.

Re: Is there anything to shoot in Socal?

Yes, there's a fair deer population on Palomar mountain. Used to bow hunt up there. Most of the ones I see are Columbia Blacktails - pretty small. Have seen a couple big whitetails near San Pasqual valley, but not in a place I could hunt.

I understand the turkeys are getting thick in the same area. But I haven't hunted in about 15 years.

Biggest problem for hunting in this area, is the sheer number of people you stumble over in the field.

There are no Blacktails in SoCal or any Whitetails at all in Cali. Only Mule Deer in SoCal.
Blacktails are found up north.

Re: Is there anything to shoot in Socal?

Coachella Valley area and Imperial County have Dove season and it's pretty decent. Other than that, its a really high dollar hike with a rifle if you want to try to go after anything else

CP is great hunting if you are in the service. No civilians allowed.

Re: Is there anything to shoot in Socal?

I would round up a buddy or two who are also dying to hunt, take some leave and go out of state. Only about $300 for scenic round-trip driving all the way up to Montana and back down to So Cal, even cheaper if you have a friend/make a friend in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, etc.

The gun community in general is awesome, very friendly and patriotic...a lot of guys will let you shoot their $3,000 rig and ammo on good land for a couple beers.

Re: Is there anything to shoot in Socal?

Southern Mule Deer... around 130-150 lbs is as big as I have seen. On Camp Pend this year, hope to get one in the north near base Cleveland National border. We have a few places for boar, in Cleveland. Oh and there is no tag/limit for Yotes. Although there is little reason to shoot them here in SoCal as they are pest control vice livestock harassment. Rabbit.... lots of freaking rabbits.
