Is there still a need for long barrels on 1 mile + + shots ?

Long barrels of 26 inches and more have added weight for reduced recoil and faster mv and more metal to cool down faster.

But I'm reading several treads showing 1760 yards shots with 16 inches barrels.

Shorter barrels have less mass thus stronguer recoil, less metal so get hot faster and slower mv but that does not seem to be a nuisance to those hitting targets at 1 mile +

Would longuer barrels be more comfortable to shoot ?

In this scenario, I am refering to bench and prone shooting

Is there still a need for long barrels ?......say for 2 miles shots ???

I've read about 16" one mile shots, but
I think a long barrel improves your chances for hitting longer, sooner.
Compare the MV numbers for a 16" and 26" in the same caliber, same bullet.
MV equates to less flight time, higher down range velocity, less wind drift.
Isn't that a plus for just a couple hundred fps estra?
Now consider the powder choices, burn time for a longer barrel.
Can a slower burning powder get you more MV with a longer barrel or is everything all burnt up in the first 16?

Pick a bullet,
send it on it's way at some velocity that might make 2 miles.
Now add a couple hundred fps to the MV.
Compare flight characteristics of the two.

Makes sense !

All the talk about accuracy being the same reguardless of barrel lenght and shooters hitting a mile with short barrels made me wonder....

I guess the fundamentals dont change

More weight means less recoil and seeing the bullet trace.
Longuer powder burn and greater bullet distance supersonic and aerodynamic.

Longuer barrels stay cooler and less subject to warping

Not a rig for hunting for sure ;)

Don.t need manoevrability on a bench or prone.
I don't mind if the rifle weighs 20 lbs ...

Thank you !

Longer barrels dont necessarily stay cooler nor would they warp less.

Short fat barrels are typical for benhrest where weight is limited .

Fatter barrels tend towards more consistent harmonics, also being shorter there is less flex.

1.3" Where? Is there any barrel taper?

A barrel is usually listed by profile or contour. You can refernce these contours on many of the barrwl manufacturer websites.
Bartlein barrel
1.3 inch diameter at chamber end.
Tapered and fluted 26 inch long.
Don't know diameter at muzzle end but I can find out

Cadex rifle

Not purchased yet.....saving $$$$$ still !
