Is this acceptable?

Its seems to be more cosmetic that anything, but I want to be sure. The lower part seems to only be about .004" thinner than the upper. I dont know if my resizing die is kaput or I need more lube, or what. This is once-fired BHA match brass

Re: Is this acceptable?

The ring looks a bit prominent to me. When in doubt, I would toss it. It's cheaper to replace brass then body parts... Stay safe.

Re: Is this acceptable?

Sir,
I do not think it is a problem at all. I suspect you are shooting it in a slightly oversized chamber. What you are seeing is the expansion of the thin part of the case and lack of expansion of the stronger case head. I think you are shooting in a semi auto or factory chamber. Not a concern, I think. If it is a problem, it is with the chamber, not the case.

Re: Is this acceptable?

run a bent paper clip down the inside to see/feel if it has a ring.and if the tip of a paper clip catches the ring then toss it.or you can cut that one piece of brass with a tubeing cutter and take a look.wasteing one piece of brass is better than getting hurt.

Re: Is this acceptable?

Sloppy factory chamber + standard FL die = what you have

No problems really unless the primer pockets get loose or the sized case won't chamber.

mine looks the same, i reload 'em 4 times, the 5th shot i toss 'em. haven't had a problem yet.

not saying that it's the same problem or you are GTG, just that it looks familiar with mine. may be two completely differnt things.

the paperclip thing works, as does a hairpin. i like the hairpin better as its flatter and will pick up any case seperation easier. just feel for it lightly. any type of resistance, toss the case.

See this post and it will explain more what is happening.

Your fired cases will most likely measure .472 or larger. It looks like a commercial case so it started life at .465. If your sizer is taking it to .468 hold on to it as this is all you need.

measure new cases, fired cases and resized cases and see what you have.

Re: Is this acceptable?

All the cases comming out of my M4 VNC look like that (new factory ammo and my reloads.) But, be a bit careful and use the paper-clip trick to see if there is any thinning down near the web.

What you are seeing is the product of high pressure (not too high just high) and a loose factory chamber.

My body die will squish this back in (about 66% of it anyway) but it comes right back out on the next firing.

I have gotten more than 25 reloads on cases with these kinds of outdentations.

Re: Is this acceptable?

I would like to add that IMO it is not worse after sizing. I think that you notice it more due to being polished by the die and showing up more. The die will not touch the lower smaller part so the line is more prominate. If you mike it, you will see the case should be larger above the line than post sizing.
