im new to reloading and long range shooting. i got a win mod 70 260 remington with a target stock rifle basics trigger and a 28 inch shiling barrel.

im shooting 142 gr smk and n-150 power. my oal is 2.81.

when starting with this gun i was shooting 100 yds and the gun seamed to group better with hotter powder. today i moved to 300 yds and it seamed to like colder power. is this normal. do you guys think its the load it likes or a colder barrel. i know that last question is probably imposible to aswer for sure im just looking for a guess. i only shot 20-25 rds through it today

Re: is this normal

just what do you mean by colder/hotter.do you mean the burn rate or temp from the weather.I would think if you are talking about the burn rate,it might be the weather temp bothering your load.I am no pro at this by no means.but from what I have read and gather you may have a powder that is temp sensitive.if so you may want to try one that will shoot in cold or hot weather temps.most Hodgden powders if not all of their powders work in all kinds of weather.did you use two different powders. If so there again you have come across a weather deal.in some case's one powder will shoot better cold than hot, when the temp changes.for me most of my reloading is done with Varget/ works cold or hot.

Are you sure, it is a powder charge issue? If you are talking about groups, sometime the longer ( 1.380 ) high bc( 0.595 ) bullets don’t “ go to sleep “at the shorter distances and therefore tend to group better at 200 or 300 then they do at 100.

Just a thought.
