An opportunity has presented itself for me to purchase a Smith Ent. M-14. It has a Wood stock, but it generally looks like the standard fare. I'm not sure on what to look for, or what to be aware of. I'm also looking for the value on this item. Any M-14 guru's out there please chime in, it's the first M-14 I've held or really looked at up close. It's marked M-14, and not M1A.

I know this is vague, but like I said I'm like the white guy playing basketball here. Thanks for the help.

It's all in the details.

What parts were used to build this rifle?
Who made the receiver, bolt, op rod, barrel, trigger group etc...?

Who knows... you could be the next Larry Bird.

Re: ISO some M14 guidance

Its a smith marked receiver, how can i tell who made the other parts? Where would the markings be, and what should i look for? Thanks again.

Re: ISO some M14 guidance

If it is a Smith Ent. forged receiver your starting off with a quality made receiver. You should verify if it is forged or cast receiver (other people here can tell you how to identify each). You should look for USGI parts especially the trigger group, bolt, gas cyl. and op rod. The more GI parts the better. A USGI barrel or other quality barrel is a plus.

Re: ISO some M14 guidance

Contact Smith Ent. and give them the serial number. They can then tell you all you want to know about the rifle. Is it a Smith Ent. or Smith Inc. rifle? Because they are two different companys.
