Issues with -- New Remington 700 308 target tactical VTR 5R 26" VTR

Remington 700 308 target tactical VTR 5R 26" VTR .... $1700.00 + a box of ammo. <-- I think I overpaid a bit.
I bought it for bench / paper shooting. I just got it home and took it apart to clean it up and inspect everything. This is what I found.

Should I throw a scope on it and get to shooting OR should I send it back to have the barrel properly installed?

The V-barrel is obviously seriously clocked to the right. (Pic #1&2)
The scope mounting screws are centered to the bore.
The lug is slightly off from the receiver. (Pic #3)
The lug and the bottom of the barrel. (Pic #4)
The stock seems to be very solid and well made, good craftsmanship. ( a bit heavy )
The trigger feels very good while dry firing.

If I spent 1700 on a rifle like that. I would expect the barrel clocked close enough not to notice an alignment issue. I were putting a similar rifle together I would consider some great optics for it. If you have great optics already figured out and like the rifle. Give them a chance to make it right for you. JMO

I paid $539 after a rebate on this SPSS, best 539 I ever spent, course after the TPS 20MOA base & rings, H-S stock, Burris Sig 6-24 w/ball Mil-dot, Jewell trigger, then it added up to what you paid for your "tactical"rifle. And this focker shoots pretty good.

Did they have any other heavy contoured .308s? The freedom and extra funds to buy your own stock, is the issue. You can make most any of them shoot. Plus extra funds for optics is nice. But I am not a fan of the barrel style of the vtr.

I checked online and most of the 5R TT's were going for $1600.00 ish.

I'd forget the levels

What is level? At 100yds? Those "little bubbles" aren't worth shot. I've been a Builder, for 35 yrs. And I wouldn't use a level like that to "set a 2ft. window, let alone, set a scope for 100 yds. The Variance of those "levels" is too great. What you need to do, is set a 50Yd Target. Put a good quality level on it, and set your level, ie. up and down.Or Plumb. You can't use those "little levels", to set your gun. You have to "use your eye". Get your gun in "shooting position". Look at the gun. Does it look straight? Does it feel straight? Then "set the crosshairs to match the plumb mark, on your target. Lock the scope down, on the "plumb mark" with you "on the gun". That's the closest you'll get. Unless you do the same thing, at 100 yds., or 300. The farther you go, the more accurate the"plumb".Just me, Josh.By the way: I,ve got a "plain jane" 5r That shoots a nats ass, at 100, with my "special load". 37.3 Viht 135, behind a 168 BTHP Sierra. 2.96 Coal. Paid 1170, for the gun. Just picked up 2 more. They were on the sale section. I think he's got one left, for 900.

The box of ammo that was thrown in with the rifle was was tagged as $70.00. The shop was very limited with Remington 308. They did have one savage.
I have a sako 75 300wm and finding a mount for a 34mm scope was a major pain in the ass and took many many months. This is why I chose Remington, because of the aftermarket parts.

I reload, and won't pay more than 15 for a box of ammo. i just want the brass. Remmy's are sooooo easy. Nikons on top. Shooters, for 1700. 8-32 will get you there.Don't get me wrong. I "sprung" for a TRG, with a NF 8-32. 300 Win Mag. The Remmy is still "what my buds grab", when we go shoot.

Sounds like it's moving in the right direction for you. Nothing sucks much more than purchasing a new firearm and then having that type of disappointment. Although I am not familiar with that particular rifle my initial response is that it really wouldn't effect the performance of the weapon but it would drive you crazy looking at it with the amount of offset for sure!

I hope Remington takes care of you, my father in law has a regular VTR in 243 that shoots very well even in the cheap plastic stock. Yours is a disgrace for $1700, there is no reason that rifle should have left the factory like that, even if it shot like a custom. I do like the way your model is setup, handled one at Cabela's. Leaps and bounds ahead of Remington other rifles IMO. Please keep this thread updated with how Remington handles this and how it shoots when you get it back. Sending it back was really the option you had I think.

RyeDaddy, I built myself a bullit rye manhattan and admired at how the "NoobTards" we're so very quick to brag about their own gear or the price they paid or try to critique me on my purchase without a single piece of advice!
I emailed Remington last night and first thing this morning (7:36am) I had a shipping label emailed to me. The Triangle barrel is quite a bit different than what I am used to but then again it is a 5R so i expect it to shoot well. If it doesn't hold a tight grouping I will throw another barrel on it, no big deal.

Well, if you wanted advice, Id take it back if you didnt think the rig was "straight", Ive got a 700VS in 223 that the barrel is screwed on where it hangs a bit left, if I ever have it rebarreled Ill have the receiver trued, should straighten everything out. I don't think the stock on his vtr is the standard injection molded tupperware they use on most. If I recall correctly they use an bell and carlson with pillar bedding, not the best but a far cry from the bull shit they put on say the sps or the standard vtr. Price he paid is inline with what ive seen in the past. Nice rifle bro, hope big green takes good care of you

Say, I was going to ask, what does Rem put for a trigger on that VTR? For the price theyre getting it should be something better than a X mark pro shit trigger. That B&C stock should help make it a shooter, hope youre not going to have it bedded with that aluminum bedding block, I really dont think that would make a difference, IMHO. Would like to see some 300yd groups once you get it back. We'll compare, hahahaha

Got the " V" boxed up and will ship it out on Monday. I took the 300wm out today and put a couple hundred rounds down range. The Sako 75 did not like the Berger VLD ext rng 210gr hpbt. - 3-4" groups at 100yds. Damn those 210gr pack a punch!
It loves the federal premium 200gr nosler.

Good luck. For the record, I bought a set of those Wheeler levels and used them once: They are truly the definition of Chinese crap.

I use levels often. Stabila is my brand of choice but even the smallest I have is too large for trying to gauge machining tolerances. Neither of the levels you show are worth dog squeeze, including the empire torpedo level in shots #2 and 3: It's fine for plumbing or electrical stuff but completely inappropriate for what you are trying to determine.

My 5R 700 is the more widely known one and is in a HS precision stock.

I see no mention of you shooting this rifle. The logical advice I would have applied would have been to shoot it and see what was what.

Update - The website that Remington provided me for status updates wasn't working. I called the 800 number and was advised that they were going to replace the rifle instead of repairing the barrel that was under indexed into the receiver. The order for the new rifle was placed on 4/18.

I need some advice - I have been researching my ass off for a few months on the TRG22, AIAW and possibly a DTA SRS (308 cal).
My question is: Should I sell the VTR Target Tactical 5R as "new never fired" when I get it back and apply those funds towards one of the rifles mentioned above or take the 5R TT out and shoot it for a bit to see if I like it?
Is the price difference huge between a new never fired and a slightly used?
When I get the rifle back I will stop in at the dealership and see if he will let me return it and apply to difference to a rifle that is listed above, with a fee included.
* I do not have the funds to keep the TT and purchase an additional rifle at this time.

Masked - I am very excited about the SRS but can you give me some info on a few concerns that I have with the DTA? I am sorry to be picky but this is a fairly new system and It doesn't have a lengthy pedigree that the other rifles have -Yet.
Do I really need a full quad rail on a bolt gun?
The rail to receiver fit looks sloppy in pictures?
The skin fit on the bottom of the butt stock looks like it has a wide gap - could interfere with a soft bag while shooting?
Firing pin hole looks huge -- primer issues?
I have 33" arms, is the LOP to long?

I suspect Remington replacing your rifle is a major courtesy. They have not squared away nasty chambers in my 5r's or others who like me have had to rebarrel new rifles.
When you get a good one, you are set. You are lucky in this case, it is my experiance.
No one can tell you to ditch the new one, not having a good look and a few rounds thru it. Only you can.
I will tell you, only one rifle? HMMM. I was shooting last night next to a 'noob' with a HS Tactical rifle. South Dakota built 308.
He was printing sub 3/4 min. three shot groups at 500 with FGMM.
Me, I would not put the remington in the same paragraph as DTA unless it were a 40x.
Just my overview.

Did Remington give you an idea on how long the repairs would take?


Looking at how your did your leveling...it can't be done that way. Looking at your 2nd pic, you're trying to use a flat level on a radiused surface---you're balancing the level. If you look closely at the pic, it appears the action is slightly rotated to the right...making the barrel level accurate....your barrel is probably timed correctly.

The third pic appears to be of an area that wouldn't make a difference if it was level.

Tahoe, While your levels aren't precise, I understand using them to confirm what was noticable to the naked eye. I think you are doing right by having it sent back. Just me, when you get the new rifle back and no major defects leap out, Shoot it! Good luck.

If your rifle has a stock that looks like a TRG's you have a Mod. 700 Tactical Target. A picture would confirm this but the shape of the forearm looks correct. MSRP is $2117.00 and Bud's Gunshop list them as out of stock and with a "last price" of $1637.00. Some would argue against the model choice but I think you payed a reasonable price for this model. The stock alone is $449.77 at Stocky's. I doubt many of the previous posters understand which model you have.

Your wallet and needs will answer some of your questions. First, you did right to send it back and Remington's agreement to replace it is probably the result of the fact it is pretty "high line" for a Remington product. The TRG, AW, DTA are generally considered to be better products but will cost you two to four times the cost of your Remington.

The advantage to the other rifles is that they are built from the ground up as tactical rifles and are designed to withstand the rigors of combat. If you find the B&C stock to be comfortable I would shoot it before making further decisions. Trying several types of ammo is best to evaluate the rifle's accuracy. I would start with 168gr. FGMM. If you are not confident you can shoot sub-MOA consistently find someone who can. If the rifle is capable of sub-MOA accuracy keep it and spend your money on optics and shooting. If not sell it and move on.

Quarter Horse - my first intention was to pick up a inexpensive 308 for a slow build over the summer. At that time there wasn't a AAC or a 700p to be had anywhere in or around the bay area CA. I decided on the TT with the idea that if the barrel didn't work out for me I could just throw on another barrel and I would already have a decent stock to work with. Since then I have come into a bit of cash that will allow me to p/u a once in a lifetime high end rifle ( once in a lifetime for me - I am not wealthy) Hence the advice on wether to keep the Remington TT or not.
