Years ago, like 1978, I went to the USAMU Sniper School. To get in the school back then You had to promise the AMU you were going to go back to your home unit and conduct sniper training. That wasn't a problem (I was in the NG) but I also wanted to present my police dept. a program.
At the recommendations of the USAMU for a urban LE Sniper rifle they recommended something along the line of a bolt action 223, with a fixed 6 power scope.
So thats what I did, a Remington BDL Varment in 223, with a Redfield 6X Widefield scope. Sighted in at 250 yards enabling you to make head shots aiming at the nose up to 300 yards. It worked. I carried it until I retired using M-193 ball ammo. (This was before the internet told me you couldnt shoot 5.56 in a 223). This rifle is totally stock. No modifications except to put on the scope.
We both retired in 1994 but I kept my LE Instructor Certification up to date. I got a request to put on a LE Sniper School for the DHS FPS on the coast. They want to use their issue 64 grn Speer LE ammo.
Took the above gun out, tweeked it for the 64 grn bullet, and even though the Remington is 1:12, it shoots the 64 grainers quite well to 300 yards, again keeping then in a head size target without hold over/under.
Guess the old fart gun can still do it.
The fun part is, to zero this combination at 250 yards, it hits .17 inches high at 25 yards. Meaning you can zero it to hit 12 o'clock, touching the 9 ring fo the NRA 50 Ft Small bore target. Wind at 300 yards isnt that much of a problem.
Great practice. Shooting small bore targets with a 223. If you can clean the 50 yard target at 25 yards I figure you're good to go.
