Man ! It's cold for early Dec.
Wind chill of 4 degrees F.
I don't mind the cold at all but usually it slowly gets to that temp..........like late Jan/ early Feb.
Stay warm and check your antifreeze in your cars to see if it's rated for these temps and seal up your crawl spaces to keep your pipes under your houses from freezing.

It has gotten really cold really quick! Like smokerolls said, in KY we usually don't see these temps until the first of the year, about the same time we get our first good snow!

Yes I know there are colder spots in the US but adding a very high amount of moisture to the teens and then add 25 to 10 mph winds and it ain't fun.
I am familiar with the drier climates in the winter from the north west and yes it's cold but it just seems more bone chilling temp for temp in the winter here.
Just my opinion though, not trying to start a "Mines worse than yours" kinda deal.
.....Our snow and ice are really different here than say the sierra nevada's. They get two or three feet and sometimes four in a quick evening and you can plow right thru it with your truck. This area gets two feet and it will ham string travel for the masses. Yes chains, studs, weight and great tires and good driving can really give you a leg up but it's just really different.....Everything turns to ice so quickly here.

Ya, I know you're not, just giving you hell. We've had some pretty cold shit this winter already. Had several days of -15 last week without windchill. We usually don't get that cold for a little bit yet. Haven't had much snow this year yet. Just lots of cold and wind. You're right about humidity though. I work out on the river. Might be 15 when I leave town and -12 on the river in the matter of an hours drive. Still beats working inside though...

I've got -28f here at the moment and just got back from a mail run. I'll bet it was a good -35f on the river not taking into account the 10mph breeze or the speed of the snowmachine. Although, I guess if I didn't like it I wouldn't live here. Hope you warm up soon.

Oh it all just comes down to what your used to. I forgot to mention that a mail run is a 30 mile ride on the river. Last tuesday when I ran my wife down to the airstrip it was sitting at -43f on the river. That was a cold freekin ride. I'm loving the wood stove tonight. You stay warm yourself.

Last winter we had more total snowfall here in SW VA than a buddy of mine had up in Schenectady NY at the foothills of the 'Dacks....that's saying something.

Now this year it's kicking in even earlier, snow on the ground, colder than shit, wind blowing like 40 hells....more snow in the forcast.

If this keeps up I'm moving South.......

How in the hell do you keep things from freezing up? Or do you just get really proficient at unthawing them. I would think you would need a hammer or small propane torch just to keep things free and moving.
Do you all have a favorite anti-freeze spray that you use on everything that fastens or hinges? I had many things froze up today that I had to either use PB blaster on to lubricate or a small propane torch to melt the ice away. My bobcat skid loaders throttle linkage was iced up and wouldn't move, tried to warm it up with propane torch to no avail. My dump trucks back gate was froze shut and tried to free the lever that opens the bottom of the gate, used a cheater bar on it and it started to bend the steel but still froze up. My pintle hitch was froze up on my dump truck, had to melt the ice off of it with a torch just to get it to open. I'm not complaining because I think it was humorous but had to improvise.

You just have to spend lots of time warming things up and/or not letting them get that cold to start with.(battery blankets, transmission heaters, block heaters, heat tape, ect...) Also, water is the enemy when it starts getting really cold. So keeping thing dry and/or lubricated with a arctic weight grease really helps. I know the linkage on the remote for my loader freezes up whenever it's cold because there is some moisture in the sleeve that the cable runs through so by putting a space heater with attached stove pipe on it after a little while it will thaw out. However, depending on how cold it is it can freeze up again while your running it. Then it's time to disassemble it and get the moisture out of there. Everything just gets harder and more time consuming. As your finding out. Everything also gets really brittle and you have to keep that in mind as well. It gets really easy to break stuff when it's really cold. A heated shop is an incredible luxury when it comes to thawing/drying out equipment as well. I guess the bottom line is... water bad and if you don't have to do it right now, wait for it to warm up a bit. Not sure if this is legible, I'm kind of brain dead tonight.

Yea it is all the local news talks about and schools are even canceled due to the deep cold and snow. Yesterday was the first day I wore a long sleeve shirt, had a light jacket in the car just in case. My kids trick r treated in colder weather than this. High school football is played every year in weather colder than this. 25 below in the where schools limited outside activities, not cancel school. Last night watching Lex18, my wife just giggled. I like this so called winter, its Dec and I do not have to shovel snow or scrape ice.

Yeah 45.308, I'll bet you're loving this mild Kentucky winter! I got a good laugh out of that. You're seeing one of the fastest onsets we've had of our cold weather in recent memory. I think it was like this in '97 as well.

Last year, when it did get cold (round about February), I had waist-deep snow over about 1/3 of my driveway. My driveway's about 1/3 of a mile long and gravel, so there was no way to get my little Honda Fit to our house. Luckily, my parents live toward the front of the property. We were able to park out there and walk through the fields to get home. After about a week of that, I was ready for summer again.

I can't imagine having weather like that for months. Although, I think if I lived in Alaska I could cope better with it knowing what to expect. We may have a year like last year with a couple feet of snow and below freezing temps for 6 weeks, then next year we may have rain every day and have it not even drop below 45 until late February. It's the not knowing that's the bad part.

While it's not snowing here, at 25*+/- the windchill on the bike means heavy winter gear comes out. I can look at it and say,man this sucks because I have to ride, or I can gear up and enjoy it. Either way, I no longer have the option of walking out to the car because 'it's cold outside'. As Panty 6 says, "Shit, your a biker, ride your bike, that's why you got it" On days like this there are times where I just want to be 'that pussy with a bike in the garage'

-19 here right now, with -24 windchill. And yeah, that is Celsius. Add to that, we have about a foot of snow on the ground. Been like this for 3 weeks now. Comparatively, this is going to be a longer and colder winter, than average.

Prep now, anything that's needed.

We've had several days of single digits with 90+% humidity in the last week. Bitter and miserable, but you still couldn't pay me enough to move back to Florida.

I'd still be riding my bike in to work, except there's a quarter mile of four-inch thick rutted ice to negotiate before I get to the nice clear county road.
