Jewel Trigger for my rifle?

I have a Remington SS 5R MilSpec .308. I'd like to replace the trigger and I keep hearing about Jewel Triggers.

Any opinions, advice, which model to get etc. You comments are welcome and much appreciated.

This is what I have in both of my R 700Ps. Crisp, smooth and adjustable. Definitely worth the money.

A Jewel trigger requires MAINTENANCE, most if not all the people who will follow and say they broke, had mis fires, went to mush, and so on simply never cleaned there Jewel trigger with lighter fluid, get one with Top RH safety and Bolt release from here http://greatscottshooters.com/trigger.htm

Some people just don't read the manual these day:

"Cleaning: Flush after each barrel cleaning with lighter fluid. The use of lubricants is not recommended."

Hi Mark,

Rifle Basix or Timney for tactical build.. Of course a nicely tuned R700 won't be bad either. I can't speek for Jewel's as I have never went with one. I can say with confidence that they are more for benchrest/competition application's though...

I have 5 rifles with Jewell HVR triggers. One of them is my "tactical/sniper" rifle and, altought I never get it to some hard field use, I shot about 1.000 rounds throught it in one year and I never had any problem.

And I never cleaned any of my Jewells triggers. But I use a Lucas bore guide everytime and it protect the trigger from lubricants and solvents.

Stay away from Jewells for tactical rifles.

If it's just a weekend range gun, it may not be a problem.....or it may, but it won't really matter.

You will notice that guys who get their rifles really dirty shy away from them. Tailor the tool to the task.

which trigger do you recommend? I'm building a tactical rifle right now and was going to use a jewel. My only other trigger experience has been with the old remington trigger and the new x-mark. I don't care for the x-mark and know there have been some issues with the old remington regarding AD's.

what are my other options, this going on a surgeon 591 action.

I have a Jewell in my GAP and hated it from day one. Safety did not engage and when it did, would not disengage. After 400 rounds, still have trouble with it engaging but comes off now OK. I do not like the narrow shoe. Breaks at 2.5# a little stiff for my taste. Someday I will replace it, GAP was out of 700 triggers so I got the Jewel at cost instead of adding more time to my build is why I went with a Jewel.

Rifle Basix in my 700, smooth as butter and I prefer the wide shoe, to me anyway less likely to roll my finger to the side of the shoe. Breaks at 1# even and has for 1400 rounds.

I tried a Timney and the shoe arc (curve) was too much for me, I had a hard time getting low on the shoe for a straight back pull of the finger, I prefer the flatter or more vertical like 700, RB and the Jewel.

Best trigger I ever used was HS Precision in Lt Wt Pro Hunter 300WSM.

Well there you have it Mark and Kat. If you want a trigger for a more durable purpose "other than beerbelly bench" and your intent is a more durable build, than the Jewell isn't what you want.

My current build is a .338 Norma Magnum topped with a Premier Reticle's 5-25x56. The trigger is going to be a Rifle Basix. It was either that, Timney, Huber or an tuned R700 with Jewell being my last choice. Now if you want a range gun than a Jewell might be what you want.

I've dragged my Jewell's thru all kinds of HUNTING conditions, followed all directions, and have never had a problem. I did have to move some material on an aftermarket stock when doin a build one time for the safety to work, but after that it has been GTG.

& ( They Fail/Come Loose because) . Most guys will buy the (Hunter-Varmint with safety and bolt-release) Jewel model trigger . They will let-loose on the internal adjustment and fail you by Trying to take the pull-weight down way below recommended tolerances Without using/installing the available lower-pull-weight adjustment springs that are given with the Trigger group on purchasing. The factory installed pull-weight adjustment spring will Only take it down so far On lightness of pull before the operator will make it into a failure waiting to happen .

Other than the Thin profile Trigger shoe. I really came to like jewel. Every Month Just Douche The Trigger Group out with a couple squirts of Lighter Fluid . Not that hard for maintenance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they all user adjustable? I know the HVR in my Remmy is. I have been happy with mine, but only a couple hundred rounds so far.

Further, if the safety is an issue I'd send it back for replacement.

I have several Jewell triggers,on hunting and varmint rifles.I have not had any trouble with them,but I don't crawl thru swamps or fast rope out of helecopters.I do hunt in all kinds of weather,and sometimes dust.I clean them with lighterfluid,like the instructions say,and have had no problems.They are easy to install and to adjust,and you can safely adjust them down to about any weight that you want.As someone else already said,you may have to remove a little material to clear the safety,not hard to do. The Timney 510 is my recommendation for a tactical rifle build. I am currently running one on my 700 until I can get a replacement spring for my pre-2006 Remington trigger. I still may keep it in and just use the old Remmy for my M40A1.

It works well and nullifies any of the safety concerns with the old Remington triggers.

I don't have any stake it what triggers any of you choose. I don't sell them and I don't work on them. I am just a firm believer in choosing the right tool for the job. You can use a hammer to pound in a screw, but that doesn't make it the best way to go.

A classic idiom I like to use is "If all you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail."

If you have a benchrest rifle....stick a Jewell on it. If you are going to be out in the desert with fine, blowing sand or in the mountains with snow, rain and mud choose something else.

He decided on a Jewell... I'm not sure why people buy/have built tactical rifle's and have decide on a jewell... I'm newer, but I just don't understand why someone would choose a jewell over a timney or even a tuned R700 trigger...

Everyone that hates their Jewell's can send them my way. Mine have never let me down. My equipment has been frozen and dirty enough that my Glock wouldn't cycle, but my rifle still went off without a hitch. Use them on our tactical competition rifles, hunting rifles, varmint rifles, etc.. I even have a couple deployed right now with them.

I have a Jewel on one rifle and a tuned Remington on another. My vote goes with the Remington. I don't like the narrow shoe of the Jewel.

If the Jewel trigger is bad. Then why does GA offer them as an upgrade. They are crisp and reliable. Remmington triggers if they are the older ones could be work to a decent trigger. I don't like the newer ones. They do not brake on the same weight, they brake once at 2lbs and the next time at 2.5lbs. Jewel will brake at the same weight you set it on.

My vote is on Jewel. If not Jewell then go to CG Jackson triggers. But don't compare a 100 dollar trigger to a 230. Is Nikon better than NF or S&B? Come on.

Because as evident in this thread....people will buy them.

You can install what you want. Lots of folks have this problem that after they buy something they have to convince others that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. If someone points out flaws in the product they take it as a personal insult.

Because a Jewell works on someone's pet rifle does not mean it's going to hold up to a single outing on a working rifle. Some of you folks just don't understand the difference. When someone has to follow "its a great trigger" with "when you keep it clean" that should be your first clue that it doesn't belong in a tactical rifle. When the manufacturer blames a trigger failure on dirt or a suppressor, that should be your second clue. Hopefully you don't need a bullet hole in an unintentional target to be your final clue.

Use what you like. It ain't my rifle and most of you don't shoot on my ranges.

and dar, attempting to compare triggers and optics makes me believe you may not have much knowledge of either not to mention you don't seem to know the difference between BREAK and BRAKE.

The rule of thumb with using a Jewell in the tactical world seems to be "keep lighter fluid on hand to flush it out from time to time." Great for bench. Not so much for the field. I run a Schilen so I don't have a dog in the fight either way.

There is nothing personal about a trigger. I have seen Rifle Basix mess up. I agree with the old style Rem. trigger. but don't like the X triggers. Maybe the scope thing was a little overboard but talk about taking things personal.
I would say the majority of shooters on this site could use a Jewel for hunting and comps. If for tactical and ended up in high dust areas. You have to do maintenance on you gun for you bolt and trigger.
One more thing that is noticeable. Why does someone always want to point out spelling. WTF

I picked up 2 Timneys last month on sale @ Midway for the cost of 1 Jewell. Dropped them in .223 LTR and .308 LTR. A 10X inmprovement over the stock X-Mark.

I find it humorous because it's a totally different word with a different meaning that you are using incorrectly.

A trigger BREAKS. A barrel has a BRAKE.

If you don't know enough about what you are talking about to use the correct words, then why should anything you say be taken seriously?

I am a bit of a country boy and half the time I am posting, I do it from a mobile device. So I do misspell words from time to time. However I KNOW the meanings of the words I am using. At least that is the case until the iPhone replaces them for me.

I have a Jewel on my prairie rifle. I have drug the rifle threw the dirt, used it in the rain, snow and well below freezing. The trigger has never failed. I can not comment on whether to use it for a professional tactical rifle since I am an amateur. I really like the Jewel and would put it on any rifle I own.

You do not want to flush any debris into any trigger during cleaning. Lubricants necessarily leave a film and the film will hang dirt. Either of these could cause problems with any trigger.

The dimensions of the jewel trigger are different than the stock Remington trigger. If the rifle has an after market stock or bottom metal there can be clearance issues. The safety connector can bind on the right hand side if the inletting around the trigger is not generous or not opened up during action bedding. The bolt release tab can also hang up on after market bottom metal without some fitting.

Again you missed the concept. It's not about spelling. It's about accurately conveying the concept you wish to present. Apparently in that vein I have failed miserably.

Maybe you can tell me why you stand in a tree. I prefer to sit. Much less of a chance of falling out.

Jewel triggers business location is next to mine and I have been in there shop many times. I also know who produces there componets, they build an excellent product follow the instructions. I hope people change the oil in there trucks when the manufacturers recommends. Anyway I have watched their triggers being assembled they do a fine job & build a good product. In my GAP rifles I run tuned remington triggers, my hunting rifles have jewels and I have never had problem one.

Terry Cross built me a rifle a few years back and convinced me to stick with a Remmy factory that he tuned. Breaks as well as my aftermarket triggers. But this is ussually not the case.

I like the Jewell's on my R700's
Just got another a few days ago with the X Mark Pro trigger and will be installing a Jewell from the get go. I never let my triggers get dirty and have never had a problem with Remys or Jewells. I have a new X mark & old stlye tuned SS Remy triggers to trade for those of you that don't care for your Jewell.

Wow, there are lots of differing opinions! I just got a GAP with a surgeon 591 and a Remington adjustable, stock trigger. Can't get used to it. I was thinking about a jewel. Now I'm wondering. I did like every Shilen I ever tried, (2) I may go that route. Sounds like the best of both worlds.

While I have a couple Jewell triggers, the only advantage I can see to them is when you want to vary the trigger pull from a few ounces to a few pounds. If you want a 2.5-4# trigger, pretty much any aftermarket trigger will feel as good as the Jewell and allow you to buy more ammo to practice with.

I have 3 Jewells and have never had a problem, although I use my rifles for punching paper, and shooting steel.
I did have a Timney trigger that I regret getting rid of, it was adjusted down to 1 1/2 lbs and was very predictable. It does have a big trigger shoe which took some getting used to.
