I learned last weekend while having lunch with a couple of historians that Cornelius Ryan's archive is still available for research. Including something like 3,000 questionnaires and notes from 1000 interviews he sent out/did with D-Day Veterans as he was compiling "The Longest Day." Similar for The Last Battle and A Bridge Too Far. It's one of the greatest primary source records of WW2 extant.
He was an amazing and ground-breaking historian. Who often gets pooh-pooh'd by the ivory tower academic set because he wrote best-sellers. And never even went to college... studying violin as a youth. And was a mere 'journalist.' Jealousy is alive and well in universities. Fact is, the man inspired three generations of historians and made Military History a serious pursuit. Along with Kenneth Roberts, Cornelius Ryan made modern military history a 'thing.'
Some say that everything we see now goes back to that day. I'd be hard-pressed to dispute that.

From my 2016 bike trip... The best experience was the St. Lo breakout cemetery. My Norwich classmate was commandant there. It was basically empty when I went. The two of us walked it for hours. It was far more moving than the Normandy "Bus Tour" cemetery which was not as solemn as it should have been. Too many Chinese bus tour folks trying to find "Private Ryan's" grave... and stomping over anyone from Easy Company headstones... standing on them for selfies. Really. #@*&ing tourists.

Utah was the best... was there at 5 AM. Empty. Beautiful. The bunkers were all still there.

Motorcycling through Bocage Country was fascinating... the challenges of fighting in Normandy were readily apparent. Especially after almost getting plowed down by tractors at several corners. It would have been terrifying country to fight in. As it was to ride in.

One of the greatest honors of my life was getting to meet someone who was there. Paratrooper.
Thank you for these pictures. My Dad was wounded somewhere near St. Lo. He passed in 1990. Plan to visit there myself soon as travel restrictions ease up.
My father was 17 when he joined the army during WWII. He was a little late for this battle, but his life was changed forever once he got there. A year in an English hospital and another year at Walter Reed.
That generation was like no other. My uncle (dad's brother) fought mostly in Northern Africa and then he was sent to the Pacific theater. My other uncle was killed in battle. My mom's brother was killed in a train crash going from basic to NY/NJ to be deployed.
I can't imagine today's kids being drafted and fighting like those guys. I miss my dad, but he never spoke about the war. My uncle told me not to ask him about what he saw or what he did. My dad became a saved Christian after coming home.

A relative on my Mom's side. Her uncle was KIA in WWII. Prior to the war, he was an accomplished trick rider who rode with famous Hollywood cowboys at the old Will Rogers Stables in Palm Springs, CA, may have been an extra in old western movies, and was good friends with Tex Ritter.
