My Ex did everything she could to turn Junior against me after the split. Even after many years of,"Daddy is a bad person because he kills animals"... Junior came to me a couple of spring seasons ago and said he wanted to try turkey hunting. We had a great time in the woods that year and I hoped that the hooks were in deep. This year, some ILEAP test (that he could not miss the week before or the week of the test) kept him from making the turkey hunt trip, so he asks me if he can come with me for deer season this year. I could barely contain my happiness.
I started looking for a youth gun and tested slugs and buckshot in his handy youth shotgun. This weekend, my #1 nephew hands me a .243 youth rifle that his nephew had outgrown and tells me that Junior can use it this year for the trip. We made a run down the bayou to a homegrown range at a friend's place and Junior made me proud. The rain set in quick, so we only got a few rounds off before heading back, but he continues to be a surprisingly good shot.
