If it's a numbers matching gun with the original stock, I'd keep it with the gun, at least- just in case you ever want to put it back. It should have the serial number of the gun in the stock's barrel channel. I'd say it also depends on how you are wanting to build the gun. Are you doing a lot of modern modifications or are you going for the period sniper rifle look? I haven't messed with the modern sporterized ones that much, but I have done a pair of the retro sniper clones (a short side rail build on a 41 DUV russian capture rifle, and my current 43 BYF low turret rifle) and I've been pretty happy with how they have turned out overall. I'm a bit too much of a perfectionist and so there's ALWAYS going to be something not quite "right" for me, but all in all they do make an interesting replica of a historical rifle without spending a fortune on putting them together (compared to buying an original German WWII sniper rifle, anyway). It all really depends on what YOU want it to be, to suit your desires and budget.

Here's my current low turret:

And here's what the short side rail one looked like:

Again, neither of these may be what you are wanting yours to be- just a couple of options/ideas. But for what its worth; I would get an aftermarket stock or get a spare one to modify IF yours matches the receiver's serial number. It's hard to "un-cut" wood later on, if you should change your mind.

Boyds makes a laminated thumbhole that's very nice. You can get them finished and ready for bedding for under 200 bucks or you can get them with the action inletted, inlet the barrel channel and stain/finish it yourself for about 100 bucks.

If you're a lefty shooter, you're mostly screwed though... it took me (southpaw) 6 years to find an acceptable stock for my k98
