Ive got a 5 ponds with in a few miles of home That i want to get in and out of quick. Alot of them are canyon areas i cant get to from foot Im new to the kayak thing i want something light that will fit in the back of the truck (f-250) thats outfitted for fishing and will hold a big guy 6'3 275. Would i be better off with a short john boat. any opinions appreciated. Thanks

If you're new to kayaking, I suggest getting an open-deck kayak. They're heavier, but that's their only real downside. On the plus side; they're stable, they're easier to get in and out of, and there's lots of places to mount a rod holder.

All that said; I used to do a lot of fishing from my closed-deck sea-touring kayak. Getting drug around the bay by a salmon or sea bass is an E-ticket ride and a half.

For ponds and lakes, kayaks are hard to beat. They don't spook the fish at all.

I have a 8' kayak that replaced my old open deck. on my new one I mounted a rod holder and a paddle holder. the paddle holder may be the most important part. lol the only thing I miss about the open deck is I could put my feet in the water while fishing, its nice on those hot days. there are a few companies making small 8'-10' fishing kayaks that have built in rod holders and a place to store tackle.
