Keep it 308 or go 223?

I am getting a B&C A2 for Christmas and then will start looking at a new barrel. I have dies for both and already make loads for my AR. I plan to get into F Class comps next year as well so that may help you in giving me advice.

What do you guys think should I stick with the 308 or should I re-barrel to a 223? If I rebarrel what all will I need to do? Thanks for any help.

Sweetheart,

You are in so far over your head,I'm gonna letcha' keep thinking you've a clue!

Not sure on the above, but, I think I would need a new bolt if I went 223???

I will probably keep it in the 308 --- you guys have any recommendations for heavy varmint barrel in 308? Should I just get something factory off of Savage as that would be a good upgrade from my Stevens 308 sporter barrel? Thanks again.

Yep, he's back folks! Laffin' indeed!

Deltagunner - If you change to .223, you'll just have to change the bolt head, not the entire bolt. IMHO, I'd stick with the .308 Win. Take a look at the McGowen Prefit Barrels for upgrading your Stevens.

Re: Keep it 308 or go 223?

I would keep it 308 but if you do want to switch. you will need:
.223 bolt face
ejector
bolt shroud
internal mag box & follower (if staying with the internal mag)

Another suggestion if you don't have a nice trigger already is to find a pre accutrigger savage trigger; they adjust nicely and can be had for about $20.

Converted a centerfeed stevens 7-08 to 223 using a prefit mcgowen barrel, it turned out pretty darn nice.

Re: Keep it 308 or go 223?

Don't rebarrel. If you want a .223 for some reason, such as less expensive ammo, smaller game, or shorter distance target, just buy a new rifle. For the cost of re-chambering and a new barrel, you can gete yourself a fairly nice new rifle.

Re: Keep it 308 or go 223?

Just a thought but for F class I would recommend a .284. you get really good ballistics. but the .308 isn't all bad. Or have you given the 7mm08 any thought you can reuse your brass. but if you go F-class you'll probably be using Lapua brass.

Re: Keep it 308 or go 223?

I will probably stick with the 308. I have heard good things about McGowen barrels. What do most go with, steel or chrome moly? I have chrome moly on my AR and seem to like it but would like to know what is best for precision.
