Let's not turn this into a "keltec=crap" thread but instead i'd like to discuss another attempt at bringing the 22WMR cartridge to the handgun world in a (let's omit HIGH CAPACITY for now) semi-auto format.
We've had the AMT Automag - plagued with reliability issues, and at one time there was the Grendel P30. Given the ties the creator of the P30 has with Keltec - it's no surprise that the new PMR30 shares design queues with what I am willing to call it's predessor (sp). The "new" PMR30 looks to me to be a very interesting piece of machinery indeed.
Okay...the 22WMR is NOT a plinking round - it's a little pricey to consider a plinker - the cheapest I can find ammo is just at 9 bucks for 50 rds and though still cheaper than many centerfires, a 22LR it is not. Filling it to capacity every time and emptying it would prove to be fun yet more costly than a box of federal bulk 22LR.
On the receiving end, as far as rimfires go, I would NOT want to be shot with one. I have hunted with WMR for many years and know first hand what they do to small critters (and some not so small critters too) and I have to tell you that the 22WMR is no slouch if it can develop the necessary MV out of the pistol barrel.
as a SD round, there will always be critics of using rimfire for SD, and there will always be the crowd that looks for the bigger slugs...this all has merit. But take it for what it is and ask yourself...would you be deterred by 30 rounds of high velocity hollow point pills? What if the shooter had the forethought to stagger bullet types in the mag? HP, Solid, BT, solid, HP, etc...
taken from Chuck Hawks:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Used for self defence in a revolver, the .22 WMR has compiled a 42% one shot stop rate according to Marshall and Sanow. This is far superior to the .22 LR and .25 ACP, and makes the .22 WMR the best of the small bore handgun cartridges.</div></div>
at MSRP of just over 400 bucks...it's attractive as not only something "new" for the folks that always wanted the grendel, and something "neat" for all the folks that wanted a sidearm that ate the same fodder as their small game rifle...both groups I fit into well... but it's also filling a niche that currently has virtually zero competition.
I don't think they would see much in the realm of aftermarket barrels - not certain that a 17HMR would be in the works, but this is likely going to be one FUN and useful little sidearm.
30 rounds of 22WMR is quite a bit of firepower in a package that small. Wish they could do something with the length of that grip though...you better have big mitts to reach around those bullets.
The only thing i can think of that would make this little thing more useful/fun/interesting is a short barreled carbine that takes the same mags.
Thoughts??? (as I don my flame retardant suit...)
