Hey, we were considering Charleston too, as my wife's family lives in Rainelle. Looking to move near family. Tell me about Lexington, as I haven't done much research, the mrs's has done most of that.
Wife says Charleston is okay, but mostly Chemical Engineering jobs, etc..

Lexington is big enough to provide everything I need out of a city(except enough work
), yet small enough to not have too much of the big city problems.
If you're in to hunting, fishing, bicycling, off road or street motorcycle riding, boating, hiking, caving, kayaking, or just about anything else that is outdoors, Lexington is great. Weather is a true four seasons, with winter being the shortest, with just enough of it to be too much(for me).

Elevator install & repair, specializing in high rise buildings. It's tough wanting to live the country life as far away from the big city as possible, yet needing to be close enough to a city with enough work to keep me employed. Cincy is as small as I can go and I still end up having to travel a couple months a year.
For more insight in to Lex., join one of the lake cumberland forums and ask for input from those who already live in the area full time. I don't think you'll find anyone who doesn't like it there.

Just moved to Lex last May from Alaska. Still experiencing shock. Wife loves it the warm weather is good for her, I hate it. But I do like the cost of living, we rent a 900Sqft apartment for $650 in the Hamburg area with covered parking, covered deck and separate covered entry way, water and waste averages $44 a month, electric ranges from $50 to near $100 a month, gas now is $3.15 gal, wife and I spend about $350 a month for food, taxes are sort of high at 6.5% but not as much as surrounding areas, not quite as busy of a city as I thought it would be, the city is spread out on a wagon wheel spokes and roads that circle around the city, traffic is not too bad but new circle, UK love is outrageous and BB rules, even during football season BB had top stories most day and it was not even BB season, horse racing is next and was top stories in the news, weather so far has not been bad but KY have no idea of winter, we supposedly had a fall but I missed it I guess as I did not notice as it was hot till Thanksgiving, summer was almost bearable, no idea of spring but allergies are bad during May-July. When it rains, they are terrible. Our dog even has allergies and has to take medicine and according the vet, its common for pets. I was told crime was not bad here but yes it is. Lots of robberies, assaults and break ins. Drug use is very high and some sort of law even legal prescribed drugs that you have to take a pee test once a month and all prescriptions must be reported to the state and only certain Drs can prescribe narcotics. You have to be a citizen for 6 months to carry a firearm with a permit but it is NICS exempt, not much open carry here. Driving is boring with nothing to see, roads are lined with trees limiting the view. When it rains lots of accidents along I64 and I75. In general people are more friendly than those in AK but that is what makes Ak, we are anti social for a reason. No one here is in a hurry. Shopping, people just plod along, clerks same thing, I am told that is the way it is. Checking out people stand and talk and have little care about those waiting in line but most waiting seem to not care either. Out SW Ky were my wife is from, total slow motion and super friendly.
My biggest complaint is there is no public land, just try to drive away from the city and find open public land to target shoot. Sportsman Leagues and shooting ranges are where most go. They are expensive $300 a year plus range fees or full and not taking new memberships. If you want to hunt you must find a farm and get access too it or own it yourself. Most have to lease the farm. Getting invited to these farms is quite difficult as most do not want to lose their lease and access. I am use to driving 20 mins to target shoot, 30 mins for 1000 yards, not possible here.
Coming from TX BBQ sucks, even AK had better BBQ but we found some small place out at Cave Run lake very good brisket. Several good steak houses, 12oz New York strip is only $30 = $50 in AK. Not very good Italian or Mexican that we found yet. Seafood is a joke and nobody knows fresh crab or salmon, its not the same or good here. Fast food rules.

Dude, you broke it down just how I wanted. Right on. So, no place to shoot is a fucking game killer for me. Guess we'll have to house hunt with land. CHL, no problem? Thought KY recognized Tx CHL? Will have to research. How is KY with regard to NFA items?
BBQ is no biggie, as I can cook a mean brisket/steak/ anything really. Seafood, well that may be a problem! BB rules, that's what I'm talking about! Kind of like slow, how it is down here, but minus the drug trafficking from the border towns up I59.

Semi retired, one reason we moved, we can survive here on my military retirement that no way I could in Alaska, our house was $1104 a month, $900 for food, elect bill was $400, gas was $400.
There are areas to rent houses around $800 near Man o War and I75 in Hamburg that is east Lexington. Between Richmond Rd and New Town Pike east Lex is where I would suggest for Lex. Not quite as congested as west and center Lex but I have only been here for 9 months.
Good steaks are $30 here at good steak houses that would be around $50 in Alaska, wife and I eat out on around $25 at most sit down restaurants to include average steaks. We can eat fast food for $12.
I hope Mammoth Range with 1000 yards opens to the public. National Forrest has public ranges but finding time to be there alone to train can be hard, most have just a couple benches.
Have no good idea on houses and land as have not considered it but I understand they are half of what a same size house in Alaska.
Another thing is air travel, Lex airport has no major air carrier so driving to Cincinnati to fly out is best, Louisville airport is OK but traffic is worse on 2 lane I64 than going north on I75 three lanes, about same distance but quicker to Cinn. Flying to Alaska from Lex adds major coin to airfare Vs Cinn to Alaska.

We or I am use to driving somewhere along just about any road, pull off the road, camp, build a fire, do some plinking with 22s and 45s, pull out the fly rod and wet it for trout, have no one in the area, its how I did things most of my life and well I cannot do that here.

Hi, I'm from Lexington originally. In northern Ky now. Ky sportsmans club is real nice and worth the 300 a year. There is places to hunt and shoot in the area. There is a club by bowling green that shoots out to a mile. Email me if you would like to know anything. Chris [email protected]

Another place you may consider is clarksville tennessee as a chem engineer. There is a new place opening up called hemlock its a dow corning facility and they are hiring like crazy right now.

My biggest complaint is there is no public land, just try to drive away from the city and find open public land to target shoot. Sportsman Leagues and shooting ranges are where most go. They are expensive $300 a year plus range fees or full and not taking new memberships. If you want to hunt you must find a farm and get access too it or own it yourself. Most have to lease the farm. Getting invited to these farms is quite difficult as most do not want to lose their lease and access. I am use to driving 20 mins to target shoot, 30 mins for 1000 yards, not possible here.
Coming from TX BBQ sucks, even AK had better BBQ but we found some small place out at Cave Run lake very good brisket. Several good steak houses, 12oz New York strip is only $30 = $50 in AK. Not very good Italian or Mexican that we found yet. Seafood is a joke and nobody knows fresh crab or salmon, its not the same or good here. Fast food rules.

Dude, you broke it down just how I wanted. Right on. So, no place to shoot is a fucking game killer for me. Guess we'll have to house hunt with land. CHL, no problem? Thought KY recognized Tx CHL? Will have to research. How is KY with regard to NFA items?
BBQ is no biggie, as I can cook a mean brisket/steak/ anything really. Seafood, well that may be a problem! BB rules, that's what I'm talking about! Kind of like slow, how it is down here, but minus the drug trafficking from the border towns up I59.

45.308, you moved right into one of the metropolis cities of Ky, of course you are going to be a driving distance of just about anything. Does Ky have things like Alaska, not exactly but we have just a different setup. We have perks and we have drawbacks just like every place on this planet. Who you know matters a lot in Ky. The right person can open your eyes to many things that otherwise would remain non-existant. Kentucky has hundreds of thousands of acres in public hunting,camping and hiking areas. Just in Daniel Boone National forrest there is 100,000 acres and I have ridden a motorcross bike around just a small section and we did 100 miles of challenging hare scramble style rides. You can get lost in many sections. While our little state cannot compare to the vastness of Alaska, I promise it will be big enough for a person to get worn out and lost if you didn't have a good bearing and travelled deep in some of the woods. Our knobs are short but steep and challenging. Our type of hunting is more like CQB hunting, most shots are closer rather than far off but our knobs can present a long distance shot if you can see clearly thru all the brush. Any public land (Like WMA=Wild life managment area) can be hunted on unless otherwise specified. You will find many trucks just pulled over next to public lands and people hike in to go hunting. I promise you will get a work out if you shoot a deer a few miles from the truck. I take some of my hunter relatives from the sierra mountains turkey and deer hunting on our short "Little" hills and they are worn out when the day is over and they are in good shape physically.
As far as class three weapons, this state is a great state to be in. We have a bunch of class three dealers, weapons, shooters and one of if not the largest civilian machine gun shoots in the US if not the world at Knob Creek Machine gun show (First weekend in April and second weekend in Oct as long as the creek doesn't rise). They say there are more millionaires at Knob Creek show than there are at all the major horse racing events. We Kentuckians need to show you whats good about Kentucky but you must realize that it ain't Alaska and you must want to have a good time or we won't be able to help you.
But we are more than willing to try.
We would be delighted to introduce you to Knob Creek machine gun show in April or something else.

I am dying to head out and fish sometime soon.
Turkey season is getting nearer and thats a cool sport.
Boyle County Fish and Game farm (Central Ky)has a great 300 yard rifle range with steel at 200 and 300 and we have a great 25 yard dedicated pistol area with reactive steel pistol targets (All shooter benches are covered from sun and rain), we have 3D archery range, skeet thrower / shotgun area and pavilion for cookouts/and family partys (No alcohol allowed on the premisis to make it family friendly)....All for $35 per year and the range is very clean and well taken care of. (We have 900 members). It's not a 1000 yards but it will do for many shooters that want to work on 300 and less.
Some of us have access to much greater ranges as well.
I hope this helps in shedding light into some of the good Ky has to offer and I am but barely scratching the surface.

You have to be a citizen for 6 months to carry a firearm with a permit but it is NICS exempt, not much open carry here. Driving is boring with nothing to see, roads are lined with trees limiting the view. When it rains lots of accidents along I64 and I75. In general people are more friendly than those in AK but that is what makes Ak, we are anti social for a reason. No one here is in a hurry. Shopping, people just plod along, clerks same thing, I am told that is the way it is.
