I just picked up a Kidd Supergrade last week after deciding not to dump the cash into a 40x build. In short, I am extremely pleased with the rifle. I had a Kidd Classic rifle that I just recently sold and immediately regretted selling it, it shot extremely well so I figured I would give the Supergrade a shot.
Tony does some great work. I sent over a B&C Anschutz style stock and Tony did the inletting for the rear tang and hold down.
I ran 50 CCI Mini Mag HP's through the rifle to "break it in" and get the barrel nice and seasoned, then I started doing some accuracy testing with a few boxes of ammo I bought.
Here is a list of what I tested:
Eley Tennex
Eley Match OSP
Lapua Midas +
Wolf Match Extra
Federal Gold Medal Match
CCI Mini Mag
Aguila 38gr Sub Sonic HP
RWS Sub Sonic HP
Remington Subsonic HP
Federal Champion 40 gr
I started by finding which of the 7 10-22 magazines I had produced the best groups with the CCI mini mags. None of the mags were bad at all but three stood out as producing slightly tighter groups consistently. I used the best of these three which I labeled "magazine #1" for the subsequent testing. All the groups were 5 shots, shot off an Atlas Bipod and a sand bag in the rear at 50 yards off a bench. The scope is a Sightron SIII 6-24X with the MOA-2 reticle (awesome glass by the way!!!!)
What I found:
CCI Mini Mag HP's group very well for a reasonably priced round, and they happen to be my favorite hunting round. Accuracy was consistently in the low .4's with only one group out of 12 that measured .736" due to a flier.
The Lapua Midas + took top honors. I shot seven 5-shot groups that averaged .300. The smallest group was .202" ctc, the largest was .389" ctc.
The Eley Tennex was impressive as well. It produced quite a few groups in the .2's as well, with an average just slightly larger than the Midas +. The average for five groups was .312" ctc, smallest group being .252" and largest .353"
The Wolf Match Extra disappointed me. This has shot well in most of my rifles but it failed to even come close to the Eley and Lapua ammo, although truth be told, it does cost half the price of the Tennex and Midas +. I managed a few small groups with the Wolf, the smallest being .269" ctc, but it seemed to always have a flier. I would have 3 or 4 of the 5 shots all in the .2's or .3's and half the time a shot would fall outside of this and grow the group to the high .3"s or .4's. Could be a bad lot??? Who knows.
The only other ammo to mention was the Eley Match OSP. What I noticed with this ammo is that it would actually take a full magazine to "settle down" and start grouping. I have no idea why, the first five shot group measured .578", the second measured .444" and the third and fourth shrank into the low .3's and continued shooting this way.
The Federal Gold Medal Match stuff I bought shot extremely well, maybe the best, but I foolishly burned it up while I was fooling around with my scope and getting the rifle set up. I have two more boxes coming next week to test. I shot a couple unnoficial groups with that ammo that produced groups in the high .1's and low .2's. Very, very small.
Overall, the rifle is an absolute dream to shoot. Solid, accurate, not a single FTF or FTE of any kind. The trigger is out of this world. I have KIDD single stage triggers on my other rifles and decided to go with a 8oz/8oz 2-stage on this rifle. Wow. That is all you can say. Wow.
Is it an Anschutz? No, certainly is not. Its a little semi-auto .22 that sure can shoot. I would have no hesitation going head to head with any of the fancy European rifles in a practical competition or silhouette comp. This was the first time I shot this rifle as well. I fully expect the accuracy to improve as I get used to shooting it and get the ammo selection further dialed.
I'm taking it out to have some long range (200-300 yard) fun with it this weekend.!
