I just bought a Kimber Classic Custom Royal from my brother yesterday and now I need to find a good holster for it. This won't be my everyday carry but I would like to find a comfortable IWB for it.

What holster materials tend to wear off a gun finish the fastest? This kimber has a very nice blued slide and I would like to keep it looking nice as long as possible.

I would also like some recommendations on a holster to use for doing competition.

It is a full size 1911.

I don't like Kydex as much as leather and found kydex is much harder on handgun finishes. The higher quality leather holsters maintained the finish on my pistols the best.

Not a fan of kydex either. Had one for a SIG 229. Paddle style. I'd pull the gun out and the holster would come with it. Didn't like it.

I like this holster for a Kimber CDP ultra carry: Galco holsters; Holsters; Gun holster, pistol holsters, western holsters, shoulder holsters, leather holster and Glock holsters

I like Milt Sparks' Summer weight carry for a mid-size (4.25"): SEMI-AUTO SUMMER SPECIAL 2 | Brownells

I never carry my full-size 1911s.

Read the reviews.

Any holster will cause wear. Kydex is a bit harder physically on the holster, but leather has acids in it that break down the bluing. Better made holsters like Milt Sparks, garret Industries will prevent some of that acid exchange.

Some things to consider:

The more presentations you do, the faster the wear will occur
Do not store your pistol in the holster
A light coat of frog lube will slow the acid effects somewhat in a leather holster on blued portions of your pistol.

I cannot remember if the Royal is blued or KimPro'd, I believe that it is blued. KimPro flat wears off in no time. The bluing should last longer. I carry my Kimber super carry's in both types, most wear is at the muzzle.
