Has anyone had any luck with their skinning knives? I’ve got one and it’s hard as hell to sharpen and get dull before I can finish a full deer skinnin and butcherin. Maybe I need a different model?
 
That has not been my experience at all, and I've dressed five deer in a row before I started feeling like they were dulling up. D2 is good steel. I use my Coho fillet knife, and the little Cub Bear and capeing knives as my main gotos. Maybe you got a bad one, because I've used mine for years without complaint, and I have quite a few high end knives... I always go back to these because they work so well. I don't think I've actually "sharpened" them if five years. I throw some jeweler's rouge on the power strop and just polish them up.

I use the KOA Elk Hunter model and did an elk and 3 deer before touching it up.

Just a little clean up and a ceramic and off to the races.

I also have a D2 folder I use, different brand.

I will say, you are best set to keep a D2 blade sharp as it is a process once they start to dull much.

I like to “tune” on a piece of ceramic from a fancy temp probe that was part of a high end heat treat furnace. Probes would go bad from time to time.
Made a darn fine tool for keep a knife edge razor sharp.
