BAHAHAHA

It would be interesting to see who else has something like this hidden in the basement. This list will never be released though as its most likely more than you would think.

No kidding! Luckily I and everyone I know, are ALREADY under surveillance! Have you seen my beard?!?

To be fair the opening paragraph says it's enriched uranium. But one thing most don't understand is that fuel used in nuclear reactors is nowhere near weapons grade. Commercial reactor fuel is anywhere from 3 to 5 percent enriched uranium. Weapons grade is north of 80.

Don't get me wrong radioactive material is dangerous any way you look at it, but there's no way it turns into a mushroom cloud. I'd be more worried about dirty bombs than anything else.

You're right - they left the 'weapons grade' nonsense to the second paragraph.

People would probably FREAK if they knew just how widespread radioactive materials were in any number of industries, from food to manufacturing to medical and on and on and on...

Re: Kodak has The Bomb

I work in nuclear and the radiation safety training I have had has focused more on the dangers of radiography sources such as cobalt 60. There was one story of a dumbass who found a source on the ground (didn't know what it was), picked it up, and put it in his back pocket. 8 years later his buttocks still were rotting no matter what treatments and grafts performed. Lots of pictures too. Keeps me on my toes!

I wonder how many people know lantern parts and smoke detectors emit radiation?

Thorium coating on the mantle... equally no real issue. It's common to earth's outgassed Radon. If I remember right it is out gassed during illumination but much heavier then air. From a radiation standpoint its the material so don't eat mantles or smoke-detector cans.

Re: Kodak has The Bomb

Well I might be eating a bit of crow here. The last blurb in this article: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/kodak-sort-secret-nuclear-reactor-141510967.html

"As for the uranium, it is no longer at the facility. It has been shipped to a federal facility in South Carolina, the newspaper reported."

Now if I were a betting man I would say they're talking about Savannah River Site (SRS). I'm not sure what all projects they're doing over there, but I know for a fact one thing they are doing is taking weapons grade uranium from decommissioned nukes and turning it into fuel rods for power plants. So maybe it WAS weapons-grade....

Re: Kodak has The Bomb

"Dear Polaroid,

Remember that time you beat us in the patent lawsuit, and as a show of good faith we all went out for lunch? We spiked your drinks with radioactive liquid from our basement reactor. Have fun dying you litigious fucks.

Love,Kodak"

From the article:
Californium Neutron Flux multiplier (CFX) was acquired in 1974 and loaded with three and a half pounds of enriched uranium plates placed around a californium-252 core.

Those dumbass writers even explained it.

You're right - I honestly missed that part about fuel plates.

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/assets/pdf/A2189207511.pdf

This document does say the "enriched uranium plates" surrounding the Ca-252 core were U-235...which are used for, among other things, low-yield nuclear weapons.

Reading is fundamental...

Yeah, you got me...I don't really have any nuclear reactors OR a basement... *sigh*
I DO have radioactive material on my pistol sights though!

We all make mistakes. I skimmed the article the first time looking for the words uranium because I thought exactly the same thing.
