I needed to replace the barrel in my Olympic Arms Ultramatch purchased new in early '93 after an estimated 16K rounds of sage rat shooting.
The gun from the get go was confidence inspiring, especially when everyone back in the early 90's said AR's will never be as accurate as a bolt gun. After about 3 years of being beat by an ugly black gun, my friends began converting and we still shoot together every season, 27 years later. The last 4 seasons the old barrel began to lose it's touch and my bore scope confirmed it was toast. The OEM .223 barrel was 24" button cut heavy flute under handguard to H-bar profile at the muzzle.

After extensive research I chose Krieger and Compass Lake to supply a new barrel in their 22" Varmint profile 1:7.7 twist .930" at muzzle threaded 5/8x24.

After 100 break in rounds of PMC Bronze following Compass Lake's procedures I went to the range last week with Federal Gold Medal 69g SMK to see what it would do. Conditions were less than ideal 40* raining swirling winds. Shot a total of 30 rounds, this is three of the last four 3 shot groups.

Satisfied customer.

Now if I can get a good explosive 52-60g bullet to deliver similar accuracy. Nothing better than the sound of a solid centerfire hit and launch of a sage rat in the alfalfa fields. :sneaky:

My first load tests will be with 55 and 60 V-Max and 52, 55, and 60g Barnes.

So many fond memories over the 27 years I've owned this rifle, nice to see it's accuracy restored. This was in 2005 on a Rock Chuck hunt in far eastern Oregon. Rules of engagement are set up no closer than 350y to the rims, shoot 15 as a group and move to a new rim..... all day long. Hopefully we're heading back to this 65,000 acre ranch this year.

If you are talking factory ammo take a look at the Australian outback 55 blitz king. About 50 cents per round and looks like it is a pretty accurate load

I'll be hand loading first to figure out what bullet weights have potential with this 7.7 twist and 8 twist in my Tikka.

Try 52 Berger Varmit FB, N133, FC brass. Works in my 22" CLE 1:7.7. Most accurate powder amount will be based on CBTO.
