Hello all,

I have painted my A3 stock with Krylon and for a first time paint job it came out nice : ) Not original as I collected several pics of camo jobs and kind of copied one I liked and looked easy to do. (My apologies to the originator of this style)

Hmm, how do you do this?

Problem is, I don't have any confidence in the durability and would like to make it wear better if I can.

I have searched many times and just haven't plugged in the magic combination of words if indeed this has been discussed before.

Can I spray clear Duracoat over Krylon? Would it help with durability?
Is there a better way to go?

Thanks

Re: Krylon + Duracoat?

Sort of, by sort of I mean the duracoat will be more resistant on the surface but the duracoat causes a hard shell with a shitty core. The paint will flake off in no time, ask me how I know. My advice is to laquer thinner off the krylon and respray with duracoat.

Re: Krylon + Duracoat?

Thanks mprtech.
I was afraid of that.
Sounds like more fun!
And more money...
At least I am a little more experienced this time around.

BTW, how is that 6.5 Creedmoor treating you?

Re: Krylon + Duracoat?

So, moving on to Duracoat...
It looks like I will be needing an airbrush? Never imagined I would be in the market for one.

Question: Can I get an airbrush and use my utility air compressor or, do I have to use those cans of compressed air that Lauer sells with their kits? Will those work OK?

Thanks,

Re: Krylon + Duracoat?

Use the compressor you have but it must have a dryer and be oilless. Any contaminants in the air supply will ruin the finish.

Re: Krylon + Duracoat?

I have used the compressed air cans before, they can be a pain in the ass especially if you run low right when you are trying finish up a project.

+1 on the moisture trap, I picked up a cheap campbell/Hausfeld compressor from Wally world. It came with an inline pressure regulator which is needed with an airbrush, and I slapped on a moisture trap. IIRC about 20-25 psi max or you will get splatter, but the airbrush should have some guidelines included for use.

Re: Krylon + Duracoat?

As long as you prepped it good the duracoat should seal it. This is holding up great Primer,Krylon,Krylon webbing duracoat gloss clear.

Re: Krylon + Duracoat?

Well the duracoat is done.
Paint scheme is much like the krylon job.

This stuff impresses me as being tough as hell. It seems as much part of the stock as it does a coating.

The sharkskin like finish was unexpected. I think I like it so far. It may present problems coming into contact with rags or softer cloth, etc.

Very flat finish. It looks a little like suede.
