Based on the standard-issue AN/PVS-24 (M2124), the L-3 EOS CNVD-LR (Clip-On Night Vision Device – Long Range) converts an existing magnified day scope into a long range-capable night vision optic. The CNVD-LR attaches to M1913 Picatinny Rail in front of standard day scopes. Using a fast catadioptric lens, it gathers more light than its little brother, allowing it to provide crisp night vision images out to extended distances. The CNVD-LR can be easily attached and removed so the operator only needs to carry one weapon system for both day and night engagements. Clip-on sights offer other benefits such as allowing shooters to maintain established eye relief on their day scope and the ability to use it in front of a spotting scope as well.

The CNVD-LR uses an L-3 EOS Gen3 image intensifier tube. Coupled with its 68mm objective lens, it produces superior images at extended ranges. The CNVD-LR is categorized as a “long range clip-on,” putting it in the same category as the AN/PVS-27 and AN/PVS-26. Coupled with a high quality day scope, it can identify a moving human out to 1,800 meters. The L-3 EOS body housing has some very user-friendly interfacing. Focus is adjustment is accomplished with a top-mounted lever that is extremely easy to find and use in the dark. This design allows for incredibly fine adjustments. A standard rear-facing pull-knob provides on/off and gain adjustment. Basically, the controls are laid out for ease of use when the CNVD-LR is mounted forward of the day scope and requires little movement on the part of the shooter to reach.

The CNVD-LR is optimized for 8X-12X magnified optics. But, on a clear night, we were able to get the magnification up to 14X using a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15×50 scope. While the identification range of a moving human is about 1,800 meters, we found the recognition range (is the human friend or foe?) to be about 450 meters, give or take. Like other long range clip-on sights, recognition is accomplished through overall feature recognition (such as recognizing helmets, equipment, etc.). Facial recognition can be done at about 120-130 meters. Obviously, these distances are depending on the ambient lighting conditions and the quality of the glass in the day scope coupled with the CNVD-LR.

The AN/PVs-24 Clip-On Night Vision Device (M2124) Night Vision Sight is part of the USSOCOM SOPMOD system for M4 Carbine. It is designated as a lightweight, short-range clip on sight optimized for the 4x optics included in the SOPMOD program (Trijicon ACOG and Elcan Specter DR). The AN/PVS-24 provides the operator a day/night optical capability. Eliminating the need for two separate optic systems for day/night operations, the AN/PVS-24 simply clips onto the standard 1913 Picatinny Rail in front of the day optic, providing night vision capability with minimal-to-no POA/POI shift. This benefits the user by reducing the weight of gear carried into the field and maintaining a constant eye relief on the same optic. The AN/PVS-24 utilizes an L3 Gen3 Auto-Gated tube, providing a bright, crisp image.

Clip-On Night Vision Devices are very popular among Special Operations Forces because of their increased versatility over a dedicated night vision scope that needs to be re-zeroed every time it is reattached to a rifle. The AN/PVS-24 has a specific tasking in that it is designed for low-power optics. Because the system does not have to produce high resolution images at long distances under increased magnification, it can be made smaller and lighter. Its 55mm objective lens is significantly smaller than the intermediate-range AN/PVS-22, making the unit lighter by several ounces. The smaller profile is optimized for the M4 Carbine’s short carbine-length gas system and hand-guards.

The AN/PVS-24 is a robust unit that utilizes L3’s top-of-the-line Gen3 Auto-Gated Image Intensifier Tube. It performs very well when used within its operational parameters. As such, it should be used with an M4/ M4A1/ AR-15 weapon system, chambered in 5.56x45mm. It’s optimal magnification range is between 4-6x, depending on the available ambient light. The best-case usage is with a 4x day scope. During our field evaluation, we were able to produce crisp images up to 6x with a variable magnification scope. But, increasing the magnification began to lower the quality of the image, producing sparkly artifacts (a sign that a night vision device is being too heavily taxed). This happened as a result of the AN/PVS-24’s relatively smaller 55mm objective. However, the unit performs very well in front of an ACOG or Specter DR.
