Hey everyone. Quick question. I have a Remington long action kicking around that use to be chambered in .270. So, I would like to build a rifle with some balls. I have a Savage 10fp chambered in 6x but it doesn't hit with much force. What is the largest caliber a long action with a .30 bolt head chamber? I'm assuming a 7mm, 300 and calibers around there are all magnum bolt heads?

Re: LA For LR Options

Doesn't a 300 case require a magnum bolt head? A 338 edge is still a magnum no? A 338-06 is a good idea though.

I really won't to build a 6.5CM which is ballistically similar to a 300, so why wouldn't I do that?

Re: LA For LR Options

I second the 280ackley option. not too much of a barrel burner but holds it own with the 7wsm.

If you truly just want to build a FLAT shooter why not a 6.5-06. Granted its a barrel burner but nobody is hoarding 270win brass, like other gucci calibers, and its a simple sizing operation. Not to mention if you run an AICS 338CIP mag it will hold 7 or 8 rounds and give you a boatload of seating depth room and still feed.

I am having trouble deciding 6.5-06ackley or 280ackley.

Doph! My bad brother. I for some reason thought you had a 7mmRM instead of the .270. Yes, the Edge won't work w/o a new bolt.

Better than a 6.5mm not as good as a 30cal, as you would expect. Pay to Play, but the 7mm is the best ballistic compromise going in a .473" boltface long action.
