I believe they used the S&W 3rd Gen 4XXX series.. Hopefully they didn't trade them all back for the new M&P..

Some of you are more true than you know...

Our neighboring agency here traded into the M&P 45's...

We carry Glock 22... we all did a range session year before last... and they had to have Smith and Wesson come in to replace frames and misc. parts...

Still today... they have slides and other parts rust up....

Many HATE the gun due to failure issues......but do say that when they run right and work... they shoot very well....

Seems Smith and Wesson may have jumped the gun soo to speak in getting these out...

Our agency upgraded 2 yrs ago. S@W sent a rep with an m&p 45 to our range to test it. Our training Capt and range officer were totally onboard with it after one day. When the rep left he took his 45 with him and had the factory send us one so all the officers could do testing and evaluation with it. Long story short, it seemed the rep's gun was from the custom shop and the one they sent us was off the regular assembly line. Night and day difference. We ended up with the XD .45 instead. Much better gun IMO.

They're fine. Glocks have had runs like this before, where they're producing large numbers for LEO orders and something gets off on a few of them. To this day, some people refuse to buy .40 cal Glocks because of a bad run. If people stopped buying 1911s because some have parts that have broken, off-center barrels, or feeding/ejecting issues, there would never be another one of those sold either. If you like the way the M&P fits and feels, get one.

I'm an armorer for a PD that owns 30 of them. We've had them since '06 with few problems.
I carry my issued pistol off duty, and I've bought a compact for backup, and a couple full size 9mms for my daugher and me. I like them and trust them as much as any other service type pistol.

that's interesting; i work around the sheriff stations a lot here; have never seen a deputy carrying anything other than the Beretta
92F.

maybe their plain clothes types carried them.

When did stainless steel start rusting? S&W MP's are all SS except the sights.

Stainless steel has always rusted, it just rusts significantly slower than regular steel.

I do believe that all current production M&P's are stainless slides, but I'm not sure that its always been that way. The rusting problems with M&P were allegedly on the slide catch and other small parts around the slide area, and mostly due to a defective melanite coating process. I've never seen one rust on the slide or barrel but it may happen.

Sweat on some raw stainless and leave it in the heat for a while, it will corrode surprisingly quickly.

I carry mine inside the pants against the skin in a cheap uncle mikes everyday and the only rust has been on the sights. That was minor and easily taken care of. I have heard of the rusting slides before and it always turn out to be the sights. Mine has over 5000 rds through it and it gets used and abused. Trust me when I say if someone builds a lemon I get it I had a Kimber where the ejector fell out and the recoil spring broke first day. Dont even get me started on my Glock and Berretta experience and I love Berrettas. I just get lemons. The M&P is the one I have never had problems with between the 3 I have over 12000 rds through them with FTE.

I had an M&P .40 to carry for a former employer for a while. Was a real sweetheart, too. Of course, that was with the custom package our company ordered them all with, lighter, smoother trigger, trijicon night sights, and no mag or thumbs safety. Never a failure of any kind.

I'd trade my current duty Glock 22 for that one any day of the week, because my small hands don't get along with the giant Glock grip and hard-to-reach mag release. I HATE having to twist the Glock in my hand to release a magazine. It should be a one-hand operation, and I'd modify it, but that'd mean getting approval from all kinds of admin sergeants, etc. Hassle.

Our Highway Patrol recently changed to Smith M&P's from Sigs. I have no opinion good or bad on them but it would appear duty weapon choices are either politically driven or finalized by whims of an upper level type within our NCSHP. They seem to change duty weapons like underwear...pretty counterintuitive to being comfortable with a particular platform. At least they stayed with the same caliber this time!

Mine rusted because they had problems with the tanks where the finish was done. S&W replaced the slide within a week at no cost to me.

I love my S&W M&P. It's night and day better than any plastic, striker fired pistol on the market.

I love my single actions best, but my nightstand gun is my M&P Pro9. It's up there in the drawer with 18 rounds in it right now.

Bottom line is, everything fails at some point, and can fail at any point, there is no 100% reliable weapon system. Practice your malfunction drills and carry a backup!

I was told recently by a retired HP firearms instructor that the motivation for the change from the SIG to the M&P was the fact that a very few (he actually said "a couple") of the new female troopers didn't have the hand strength to operate the DA pull on the SIG. He cussed the HP brass for being politically correct and eliminating the grip strength test from the HP physical standards for rookies.

Of course, if they can't even handle a DA trigger pull, how are they going to control a combative prisoner? Call for backup every time they have to make an arrest? Political correctness strikes again......

^Seriously? People can't pull a 6-10 lb (being general here, I think the DA pull is about 7 lb) trigger with their index finger? I would really like to think something like that would fall under the category of, "Tough crap, here's a stress ball. Come back when you can carry a gallon of milk with your finger." Geez...

I agree that things are either political or whim driven with the HP here in NC. I've lost count in how many different duty weapons they have been thru. About the same with the NCWRC also. But then look at what's been happening with the command structure within the HP and that explains alot.

That could also go for some of the male troopers. The Wong guy that shot Trooper Shawn Blanton was almost 3 times the size of Blanton. A big mismatch in size that didn't help the situation any.
