Lake City 308 brass?

The last year or so, I’ve been thinking that a 308 semi auto would be a valuable piece to the safe, if sh@t ever did hit the fan, I’m sure there’s more stockpiled 308 ammo lying around than 6.5CM which is all I currently run in long guns.

rifle would mainly be a good 500 yard gun.

would I net good accuracy at that range running mixed LC brass? Or is it not very consistent?

I find LC brass to be good and if I were shooting a semi it would bethe only thing I would use. I shoot Lapua, LC, and old Winchester in my bolt gun. I do not mix years but the brass seems pretty consistent year to year.

LC brass is usually good quality and is a good choice in a semi auto. Just remember that you will have a primer crimp to deal with. There are a lot of ways to do this and its only a one time deal.

I use lake city a lot in 223 and some in 308 to me a standard.
Seems like the necks are consistant.
I don't bother sorting dates for plinkers or shtf bulk just hunting / target.

Some people don't like the extra step of reaming or swaging , good more brass for me.
One good thing about crimped brass is you can tell if only once fired.

One piece of gear I like is a swage gage to go along with the process.

Dillon super swager makes short work of primer crimps. I've used rcbs, but like the Dillon better. LC is the brass I prefer for semi auto, load a lot for bolt action as well.

It you buy one fired brass use a small base die. If it was fired in a machine gun the base will be blown out. Having one jam is a pain.

We frequently switched ammo lots with little to no change in impact, even at extended range. I only wish the brass was cleaner.

If you work up a good load, you can expect decent accuracy well past 500 yards, assuming you're running a decent barrel. I've used LC pull down brass (never fired) with the supplied primer, 178 a-max's, and IMR4064 powder out of a 24" 1-10 barrel and rang steels at 1100 yards. You'll be happy with LC. It's a little more work, but it's all I use in a gas gun.

If you're looking for a 100-500 pinker lc is the way to go, it's cheap and it lasts long enough for plinking. If you're trying to get some really long life and consistency I'd go with lapua, noseler. I have a ton of lc brass for general fun. I take a large military crimp removal bit put it in a drill, sit watch TV with a bucket to throw the brass into and a trash can for the shaving that I remove.

I run LC brass in almost all my reloading for 5.56 and .308. I do use some FGMM brass if I've already fired it in my 308 AR. I do anneal mine now as I've crack in 5.56. But it's pretty much all I use to reload for my ARs.

Definitely give it a good once over if you know/suspect it was fired in a machine gun. The 249/240 has a generous chamber to say the least.

Same boat. picked up a 308 AR a while ago and a bunch of LC brass. I just picked up a small base die so I'll probably run most of the brass back thru the die and then confirm OAL and retumble so it's all ready to load. Shot a bunch of 147/150gr plinker loads as well as some 175SMK's.

Just got a barreled bolt action in 308, so got some Hornaday match 308 brass last week (new) and then stumbled on a great deal locally for 300 rounds of new Lapua LP 308 brass. So I think I'm set for a while for both rifles!

I think it is fair to say lc brass is a standard accessible by all and a consistant reasonable quality.

As in, x-brand sucks compared to lc.
X- brand is compatable to,
and x-brand is better than lc because.

Most every reloader will understand and accept it as a metric.

If semi auto for sure. Bolt gun, decide what kind of precision you want and loadings. The only issue I could see with the LC brass is it's generally thicker, so you have to work up loads a bit lighter than the manuals because you get higher pressure from the lower case volume typically.

The barreled action I just got had a 308 barrel on it, so I picked up 300 Lapua brass to load up for that, and I'll keep all the LC for the MK216 AR.

not necessarily preferred, but as mentioned, most people with bolt guns are probably looking to extract all the precision out of the rifle. Not that semi autos are not capable of that (or the LC brass) but from what i've seen, LC is perfectly capable brass, but on the lower end of the price scale and mid range for performance. The proverbial "bang for the buck".

I have 1500 rounds of processed 308 LC brass that didn't set me back too much. can't say that I can afford to have 1500 rounds of Lapua brass for my AR10. But then again, I don't have S&B glass on all my rifles either. Just saying what the average person might consider when considering brass for a semi auto vs bolt gun. At least that was my thought process and what I did when I was looking for brass for my PWS and Nucleus. YMMV

yeah I am thinking of Using lc brass. It’s a 16in fix rifle so I expect performance but since it’s 16in I am going to hunt inside 300-400 with it and plink to 800-1000 so i don’t think I need top tier brass
