So, I’ve never shot a coyote. I have a 6br AIAT that is looking at me forlornly. It’s tired of just shooting steel, it says.

“I don’t have a thermal,” I reply.

It almost spat at me and exclaimed in a British accent, “Look you bastard, man has shot yotes before thermal existed!”

I avoided eye contact as I slowly closed the safe lol

I do have a 308 barrel for it, but I’m bored and thought I’d ask a (probably) stupid question after reading a thread about match bullet kills.

Here’s the ammo in question (I have a bunch):

I assume these factory rounds will expand a bit in a yote? They don’t in a pdog, but that’s no surprise.

Background:
I’m a small varmint shooter and don’t have any experience shooting larger varmints. As alluded to above, this ammo just pokes holes in prairie dogs (yawn). Sometimes after a direct hit to the midsection with this ammo, a damn pdog will get up and run to its hole! Sighing mightily, I simply reach for my 204 for entertainment here.

Oh yeah, I’m not a reloader.

As with killing anything, shot placement is key. If you can put it in vitals, you’ll be fine. It’s for the less than ideal shots where varmint bullets shine due to the massive trauma they cause from explosive expansion.

If you can hand load, I’d run the 70gr noslers for coyotes. More speed and a purpose built bullet.

Not sure about that bullet specifically, but coyote are pretty low on the list I care about recovering if I shoot it. If you hit bone it’ll certainly kill it quick. if it goes straight through, it’ll just die a little later. I have killed coyotes with 55 fmj out of ARs with good luck

Not a 6BR or a 105 Scenar-L, but I have a 50/50 rate of successfully (humanely) killing coyotes with the 120gr Scenar-L out of a 6.5x47. The last event was a horrible evolution that was the final straw for me to get out of the BTHP bullets and into the tipped match bullets for critter removal.

I think that they might be better if you have more body (resistance), or if you hit bone on the way in. The last one was anchored and sat down, then fell over from a true double-lung at 244 yards. Then it sat back up and took another minute with follow-on shots to finally finish it (along with a run into the house to grab more ammo).

Berger 105 hunting VLD does a fair job on them and pigs out of a 6CM, but for just coyotes 75g Vmax @ 3400 is better.
Starting loading your own, lots of better choices. If they run shoot them again :)

Scenar-L are popular for birds here in Norway, as they don't expand at all unless they hit bone.
Not sure how much sympathy you have for coyotes, but I wouldn't use it for that purpose.
Seen people try that bullet on big game, and even with high resistance, expansion is very unreliable.

80 grain eld vt out of a 6arc. Maybe try them in your BR 👀
