Anyone have any experience using Large magnum pistol primers in place of large pistol primers? I've heard it's not a good idea because of the increase of case pressure. The data I have is 11,400 to 16,800. Couldn't an adjustment of powder compensate for a slightly hotter ignition? If anyone has some insight on this it would be greatly appreciated. I'll be testing with 4.75 barrel. a large array of brass. 1.200" C.O.L 4..4 grs. of Hodgdon Universal (4.5 is the minimum with 5.4 the suggested maximum) Federal No. 1551 large pistol magnum primers with a 230 grn. Speer RN totally encapsulated FMJ. Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.

No it's not a problem, but you do have to adjust your powder charge down. I use Winchester large pistol primers which are considered magnum/borderline magnum. I get more consistent velocities with them than I did with the CCI standard large pistol and only had to adjust the powder down 1/10 of a grain.

The Federal 1551s may be a bit hotter than WLPs, so I'd start with the minimum charge and work up.

That's what I thought, How much of adjustment did you find the most consistent?
My original load with CCI 300:
4.4 grains Vihtavuori N310
Zero JHP 185 gr.
COL 1.220
.469 taper crimp
Velocity from 5" bbl was 775

After switching to WLP primers, I adjusted the powder down a tenth to 4.3 grains and getting same velocity/accuracy.

And your COL seems a little short to me, too. Increasing it will also lower your pressure.

Winchesters are my favorite for this reason. I build up all my large pistol primer loads with them.
