Rifle Scopes Laser Range Finders: Leica vs. Zeiss

I've been narrowing down my choices, and I think it is now between the Leica 7x24mm CRF 1200 or the Zeiss 8x26mm PRF Victory.

I've dismissed the Swarovski simply because the reticle is too big (20 MOA). It's too bad, it appears to have great capability.

Does anyone have experience with the newer Zeiss? Any reason to choose or avoid it as compared to the Leica?

I have had a leica for almost three years now,It has worked really well for me,no complaints,nice and compact.

Keep the Hell away from the Leupy RX Series,I had an RXIV that was total garbage Chicom Shit,sold it to a Bow Hunter at a $200 loss.Hard to range 500yds on a NR target.

Only way I would sell mine is to get a Swaro,but I would probably regret it as the Leica is a lot more compact,and with all the other stuff I carry..............

CRF, Ive done allot of testing against a Swaro, CRF, and NewCon and to me the CRF is the one to get.

Only reason I was thinking Swaro was the range capability is supposed to be more than the LRF,I will be getting a 338LM or similar in the near future.

You may want to consider the Bushy elite 1500. I have put my 1500 against my friends leica 1200 more than a few times and hes had a hard time ranging objects over 900 yards away while the 1500 ranged without a problem. I have even ranged a few cars over 1400 yards away. For the price, they are hard to beat.

I already have one!!My buddys Swaro does a little better on the extreme range stuff.The other thing I like is you can go from YDS to Meters on the Swaro,the Leica is one or the other.No buyers remorse on the Leica,if that was the case,it would be down the road years ago.

I have tried the Bushnell 1500,not bad at all I have to say.

Just played with a CRF1200 this weekend. Wish it had the ability to switch between meters and yards.

I like the Zeiss. I hit a small billboard with it the day I got it and it said 1403 yards. Got out my garmin and marked it and drove over to the billboard and marked it. Loaded the lat and long into the computer, it was only off 15" pretty good I think. Couldnt get the Leica to even hit it, sold the Leica. I think the glass is better on the Zeiss as well.

swaro,s a just so good!!!! with respect glock24 how could anyone not want one of these units .I hit 1800 yards pretty quick with mine -some times I get false readings at that distance but always know when at supa long distance ping is and reading off something closer for eg.at the distances I shoot 100-1000y swaro,s are excellent and so reliable -you know thell ping a result quick.I have found i dont have to be as rock steady as I had to be with my LIECA 900s -i wouldnt be without swaros!

I keep reading about how the aiming reticle is too large to be accurate at long distances.

Do you have trouble with the large 20 MOA circle and small (human-sized) targets, let's say at 700 to 1000 meters? Please elaborate on how you manage this situation.

If you can swing the Leica Geovid 8x42 Bino Laser you would not be disappointed. The bino lenses are real beauty and the laser range finder is spot on.

Does anyone know what the maximum distance the Zeiss LRF is rated for?

"Essential", got readings back on a billboard at 1403yds. That is very impressive, but is that exceeding the effective range in which it was designed for? -or- is that the maximum in which it will range "effectively" ?

Anyone have a pic/shot of the Zeiss LRF reticle?

A 1200 is a bit more advanced than a 900.Does the 900 have a scan mode?Just curious,never have owned this model.

I will this weekend do a 1000 yard test when I am on our range and give you an honest result-id go further but 1000 is as much as we have on our range .cheers

I like the Zeiss. It won't fit into a shirt pocket, but it will fit into a BDU pocket. I had a Leica LRF 1200 for a year or so. I was very impressed with it, and actually preferred it over the CRF. I found the CRF too small and very difficult to stabilize. Which is why I went with the LRF.

I never needed it to range more than 7-800 yards and it worked well. I recently got a 338LM and wanted to be able to range farther and ordered a Zeiss from Scott. Havent gotten to use it much yet, not at all past 7-800. I like it so far. Hope to go to some private ground where we have over 2K yard line of sight. Will see what it can do then.

Hey usmj, I like my Leica and it's been great. you mention the Bushnell. The Leica imho has better clarity on the viewing than my Bush . but My Bush. does a better job ranging in the area of water mist in the air (Very Light Fog & IR) My Leica 1200 wont push past 400 yard but the Bushnell will do it when the water heavy air refract the Ir pulse . Also with the Leica is that disappearing Aim-Box retical when the IR pulse is sent when you push the button. Another thing I would change with the Leica.

I have the Zeiss and I like it very much. I have ranged 1458 yards with it so depending on the target it will consistently do this range. Secondly it locks on a range very quickly or not at all. I was ranging a telephone poll at 986 yards over and over again last Monday and then following it up with hits on target. If I were you I'd consider taking Scott up on his offer.

Speaking only from my experience in photography, I buy NIKON, because it comes closest to LEICA/ZEISS at a price I can somewhat afford.

I think the Zeiss its very capable on game size animals out to around 8-900 yards and around 1400-1500 yards on larger targets. I wish it had threads to mount it to a tripod or to the side of my spotter though, my have to machine something up to correct this.

I really like this unit and I have had several other units including a leupold,leica 1200, and bushy. I havent had the swar only because of the vast numbers of complaints over the size of the ret. I have done my GPS experiment several times with repeated success. I developed a habit of ranging targets 2-3 times in a row each time. With all the other range finders I have had they would vary the distance pretty often. With the Zeiss it reads the same number everytime up to around 1200 yards.
After that I think its because I can hold it steady enough.

I have a Leica LRF1200scan, it will not range past 800 in the bright summer sun, the Swaro kicks ass, 1300 no problem, I have yet to play with the Zeiss, but hear good things about it.

Im glad you like your Leica. I will agree with you that the Leica has better glass, but thats it! the Bushy 1500 outperforms when it comes to ranging period! I will take better ranging over better glass any day.

I was going to my 1000 yard range to do a test using my swaro but just plain forgot to take my kit ! I did how ever ranger a guy out my window at 740 yards while doing a hand hold which isnt a major problem with the swaros -the 20 moa ring was quite big on the guy though but still got what I consider a good accurate reading .I suppose one needs to be aware when using the larger aiming ring to stay accurate for the best readings .I dont know how good the Zeiss units are but Swaros are really reliable when it comes to giving readings .
