I am a life long shooter, starting around age 7, I turn 49 in a few weeks.
I used irons mostly until I was in my late 20's. I was in the military and always shot expert often with perfect scores. On my personal rifles I used run of the mill, cheap, magnified optics but no red dots. Basically I used the cheapest 3x9 or 4x12 I could find.
Then in my 30's I started to get into red dots as they started to become more prevalent but my astigmatism always made it difficult to use them. because of my astigmatism red dots look like a sperm cell with a curled tail and a fuzzy head. I started wearing glasses to fix it but it never really got as good as I had hoped. Eotechs were the best red dot I could find, they were the best but still not great. Now I am a full time wearer of glasses to clear up my distant vision. I do not need glasses for close In reading.
In the last couple of years I have started using some very nice magnified optics. But with or without glasses they do not seem clear. And recently, in the last 2-3 years, when I am looking through any scope or red dot my vision causes the target to flutter between clear and fuzzy. I can close my eyes for 10 seconds and it fixes it for about 10 seconds then it goes fuzzy again. If I try to concentrate my vision fluctuates between clear and fuzzy very quickly. The reticle remains clear but what I am looking at goes between clear and fuzzy. It is hard to explain but it is almost like my eyes are having a spasm.
I have always been an accurate shooter, be it pistols or rifles with or without scopes. But in the last 3-5 years that has really suffered because of my eyesight. I can still shoot well but my eyesight is definitely holding me back.
I cannot read a license plate beyond about 15 yards even while wearing my glasses.
I am going to look at getting Lasik to fix my vision. Hopefully it will correct the fluctuating clarity. It should also be possible to correct the astigmatism making it possible to finally be able to use red dots.
Have any of you had a fluctuating clarity in their vision that was corrected with Lasik? Was it worth it? Cost is not an issue as long as it corrects my issues.
Did your magnified scopes become clearer after Lasik? I would really like to be able to sit behind a scope for longer periods of time.
I am going to try to find a doctor that is familiar with treating shooters. My VA optometrist let me bring in a red dot to have my glasses made to help when shooting with pistols.
