So my buddy and I went out on public land yote hunting with night vision. We got setup right at sunset and about 30mins before last light. Barely 5mins after we setup, we heard a pack of yotes within a mile away off to our right.

We did an electronic howling call to see if we could get them to head our way. No response on the call. Then we tried dying rabbit call...they shifted position but still to our right.

We decided to go on foot and pursue them. By the time we got in the area, they were long gone. Wind was very low like barely any if any.

Should we have made haste earlier? I feel like we missed the window by staying there and not shifting position right away hoping they would come to us.

same here now, they denning and pups .
don't know how long you did the stand with calling with rabbit distress ? . ( for me hunting ) I would have put at least 1 hour there . doing off and on a few times and waited and keep scanning . sometimes it just takes time for a couple of them to come-in to snoop and see whats-up .

we were there for about 45mins before going on foot.

Should be on foot the whole time. In my area the mutts are very spooky of any vehicle in the area. I live in an area dominated by cattle ranchers and they shoot at any dog they see but are almost always on a quad or in a pickup.

I had a similar scenario a few nights ago. We repositioned towards where they were howling about 45 minutes into our stand and found a pair working towards us up a gas line right of way. They walked right into our laps but we only managed to kill one of them.

Yeah, I feel like we should’ve set out on foot much earlier. Lesson learned.

either that, or just stuck to your stand you were calling from another 30 minutes of more . If they heard your call, then it is just not there #1 priority that minute . I does not always work, but I have put 1 1/2 hour at Stand, to those kind of situation were you know the group is there but know one moving in . Sometimes they act like a bunch of indecisive old women and all it takes is for one to move to you, to make the decision for another 1, 2 or 3 to follow chase to your call.

So in that circumstance, how often do you cycle the call? I feel like we just leave the call on too much and it makes them suspicious.

Will do it every few minutes the 1st 10 15 minutes, but then do call about every 20 after that . I 90% will not switch sounds once I start with one .
That years bunch might also be shy of that call sound if they been popped once already with someone using it .
