Not that this is rocket surgery or anything I invented, but I had one of my inline seaters rust up pretty good. I started doing my usual rust removal process and thought I would just throw the whole thing in the tumbler and see what happens. I have never seen this mentioned with these dies anywhere and the LE Wilson website doesn't say anything about it so I thought I would share. The die was in the tumbler with a bunch of .260 brass overnight and cleaned up really well. Used a Krazy Kloth to get it shiny and sprayed it with some One Shot. Anyway, something to consider if you use these dies. I wouldn't throw one of the micrometer heads in obviously. Use at own risk.

You gotta keep'em sprayed. I used Ed's Red and it does fine. </div></div>

Ditto on Ed's Red!

Re: LE Wilson dies and rust

I got a leak in the trailer awning at a match and the insides of my loading box got wet. It was 3 days later before I got everything out of it and towel dried. The stainless Wilson with the micrometer top was OK. But the older regular steel die had a fine covering of rust on the outside. Evidently the wax case lube saved the inside. I used a soft wire brush on an electric drill and cleaned it very well. I used some of the spray rubber coating for electric tool handles. It has worked pretty good. I gave it a light coat of the black spray rubber. I placed it on a piece of waxed paper and a plastic card on top. I cleaned it up with an Exacto knife around the edges.

Wilson stuff was made from steel and will rust, if not protected. They now offer a few things in stainless, and i really like the few stainless dies that I have.I've never tried Reds, but the wax helps. Pete

Re: LE Wilson dies and rust

When everything's done evaporating, there's a thin coating of ATF.

ATF contains a boatload of detergents, and is an excellent thin-layer lubricant/protectant. The use of a solvent vehicle allows it to be applied in lighter layers, so saturating the intended surface may be counterproductive.

The best way to use it is to lay it on good and scrub industriously with it; then remove it with solvent, dry things up, and reapply sparingly as a final treatment.

Easy does it.

Re: LE Wilson dies and rust

Wilson's stuff is made on the edge of the wet side of WA state, where it is *assumed* that everyone KNOWS how to protect their steel stuff.

My parents moved to the warmer desert, from the high cold not-quite desert of SE Idaho where winters are cold and way wet. I'm lucky that I *still* live on the dry side of life.

Even then, I remember to spray when the monsoon season hits.

Re: LE Wilson dies and rust

I had a similar problem with an L.E. Wilson case gauge, which was also made out of carbon steel. No amount of oiling would keep it from rusting, even though I live in a fairly dry climate.

I had a bottle of Brownell's OxphoBlue cream lying around, so as an experiment I cold-blued the thing, inside and out.

That was a couple of years ago. It shows some blue wear arond the edges, but with a light coating of gun oil it doesn't rust any more.
