Is it possible to use the lee handprimer for the 338 lapua case? I made clearance for the case to fit but I can't get the #8(416rigby) shell holder to hold the case.I ordered the sinclair already for the 338 and cheytac, but it would be nice to use it with the 338.

There are two shell holders for the 338 Lapua. One is for Weatherby brass. The other is to Rigby spec. The RCBS number for what you need is 14.

EDIT: According to the Sinclair catalogue, Lee doesn't have a Weatherby shell holder.

The shell holder fits but the slot in the hand primer is too narrow for the case (ask me how I know). </div></div>

Same story for the WSM and SAUM cases (404 Jeffries)

The #16 (7.62x54R) shell holder fits the case head, and the shell holder fits, but the base is too fat for the opening in the hand primer.

Re: Lee Handprimer w/338 lapua

The RCBS shellholder #14 listed above seems to hold the shell pretty good so I might just have to have it machined to fit the lee handprimer unit.

I'll verify when I get home (I must be getting old, cannot recall what I did last year), but I'm pretty sure I prime my 7 WSM using the hand primer. I think I recall opening the channel up a little bit with a drill burr.

I tried it last night, without opening the channel about 25 thousandths it doesn't fit.

I hadn't settled on dremeling open the mouth just yet, but I might do that eventually.

I did this to get 300RUM shells to fit in the autoprime (older metal version). After removing enough material from the end of the handloader, it worked perfect.

Haven't opened it up enough for my 338LM yet, but probably will try it once I start reloading for it.

Your other option would be to get an RCBS priming tool. Don't know which would be more practical or economic.

Another option is the Lee AutoPrime II press-mounted unit. I like its functioning with the exception of the feed from the reservoir. The shape of the circular piece causes greater lateral force on the base of the primer stack than the vertical force, causing bridging. I believe I have a solution, but may not be able to give it immediate attention.

Re: Lee Handprimer w/338 lapua

The reservoir as designed doesn't feed the supply chute. What I had in mind for a fix is to take a strip of metal and re-shape the lower half of the container. About 2/3 the way from the top, form the strip into a V-shaped configuration feeding into the chute. That should relieve the lateral force. For clarification, I'm talking about a single strip of metal, preferably not anything ferrous, that snaps inside of the reservoir and retains the round shape at the top, but changes the effective shape of the lower part of the container.

If you don't want to play with it, I would suggest a different tool.

Re: Lee Handprimer w/338 lapua

All that work to make a piece-0-junk $12 Lee primer work. Dude, you're shootin a gun that costs $5-$8 a round. Spend the money on a decent primer!

Re: Lee Handprimer w/338 lapua

Damn just when I thought I had all my ducks in a line. Well I'm glad I ran across this thread before the rest of my .338LM supplies got here. My Lee handprimer has broke on me 3 times...FUCK LEE!!!

Re: Lee Handprimer w/338 lapua

Just got done priming some 338lm with the sinclair hand primer. This is the ticket to priming.Slower process than the lee but feels alot more precise seating the primer with the sinclair.

Re: Lee Handprimer w/338 lapua

I didn't know that Sinclair made special tool heads for the calibers that Lee doesn't accommodate. Now your Cheytac comment makes sense to me. Had to look.

Glad you're squared away.
