hey ive tried the search option without much luck so i hope this hasnt been beat to death, but im about to buy the Lee 4 hole turret press kit with auto index. i mostly do uspsa with my xdm 9mm and only a little long range with my .308 my question is the powder measurer on midway there is two different ones both with the same name but one is round and more expensive with brass nobs while the other from what i gather is cheap plastic and sheet metal screws i feel the round one is better but the description says it only fits the load master or the pro 1000, is it actually better and if so will it fit the turret press deluxe. thanks for any suggestions and info this will be my first attempt at reloading.

ps im a poor 23 yrold college kid so please no pricey options.

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

The Lee Auto Disc powder dispensers are made to use with the progressive loading machines and activate with motions of the press. You might be ablle to mount an arm on it to manually activate it. Something bolted to the two holes on the arm and coming forward. You would be able to push it down to activate and lift to refill the cavity. The Lee Perfect Powder Measure looks like it can mount on a charging die and load cases on a turret press.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

gunsnjeeps: yea thats exactly what im looking at, whats your opinion dont hold back i wont be offended.

and my budget for the press and measurer is around $200.00

Thanks zuke for the link thats really helpful and thanks for the sound advice it was really needed.

any ideas for a good 9mm uspsa load preferably 147 gr or .308 loads for out to about 500-600 yards paper punching.

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

I just got that setup. Get the Pro Auto Disk and the double disk set to be able to load your 308. Mine is throwing a average of 43.5 grains of Varget using 2 1.57cc disks. It is a great setup that will let you load pistol and rifle almost as fast as a progressive.

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

The only Lee press I've used is the Loadmaster. I used to have some buyers remorse because I didn't get a Dillon. Then I realized my ammo is good and the press runs fine since I figured out it's quirks so who cares if it's not a Dillon? I've used Lee Dies for most of my handgun loads since I started reloading so I don't have anything against Lee.

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

well the more research ive done especially on the powder measure i think ive decided to go with the classic and get the round powder measure and prime by hand. so any forseeable problems or suggestions? snipers hide go!

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

If you are going to run a turret press in semi-auto or full auto mode for PISTOL and RATTLE BATTLE ammo get the deluxe with the double disk kit included. If you are going to get serious with your .308 the double disk kit will allow you to throw powder but you will have to check each charge to get the 0.1gr accuracy needed for good ammo.

I have run a Lee 3 hole turret press for 20+ years and it is still my go to press for pistol and quantity (as opposed to quality) ammo. It WILL loosen up on you over time so precision ammo is not the turret press's strong suit.

FWIW I have a Dillon 650XL sitting on the floor set up in .45ACP, it's been there and other locations unused for 15+ years. I still use the turret press because it's easier to set up (faster / cheaper) in various flavors.

By all means prime by hand.

Ummm,,,,,,, here read this. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...96660#Post96660

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

thanks for the feed back and the link. 99% of the time im going to be reloading 9mm for uspsa but on occasion ill load maybe 50 rounds of .308 i figured for those fifty rounds ill measure everything by hand using the scale. have you had any problems with the lee holding up or lee dies?

i actually just ordered a set of four lee carbide tipped dies for the 9mm

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

Like I said I've had the 3 hole for 20+ years and it has loaded literally more than 100,000 rounds. Is it a little looser today than when I bought it, yes. Does it still work, yes. Would I load precision rifle ammo on it, not unless I had to.

Lee Dies are great for pistol, the powder charging die and the above disk kits are the key to speed. As noted in my link I prime as a separate function and load in a 2 fisted semi-auto mode (take out the rotation bar).

L hand inserts the primed case under the powder die.
R hand pulls the handle
R hand turns the turret to the seating die
L hand inserts a bullet
R hand pulls the handle, takes out the loaded round, rotates the turret back to powder

Begin again.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

I've tried to stick only to quality dies and got rid of the inferior one's, so yeah I only have LEE dies.
I use a LEE turret press for all my rifle ammo and manual index and use a LEE hand prime.

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

doc thanks so much for the two fisted tip ive never had anyone break that down for me before that should definitely help speed me along,

zuke thanks for the experienced oppinion i feel alot better in my decision to buy lee.

Re: lee turret press deluxe powder measure????

I have the pro auto disk for mine, but soon after rigged up a uniflow with a Hornady case activated powder drop and the powder funnels instead of the ptx insert. It works awesome, I can dial in any charge and not limited to the set cavity amount.
