Hi all-

I have a friend who is looking to buy a nice left handed AR15. Any recommendations from the left handed shooters out there on brands or specific models? I think he'd like something with the following characteristic is:
-keymod or picatinny rail
-16" barrel
-adjustable stock
-rail mounted sights (not the m16/m4 fixed front sight)

Any recommendations are much appreciated!

Really not many choices out there. Stag. Rock River arms makes a lefty AR15; but their lefty uppers/lowers won't necessarily be compatible with other uppers/lowers (if that matters to your friend). Noveske and Keystone Accuracy make lefty ARs, but they use Stag receivers. Now that I think about it, I guess Keystone also manufactures their own billet, lefty reciever, but you'll need a stag bolt carrier group to go with it (.240 Tomahawk, Keystone Accuracy Custom Rifles Left Handed Specialist!)

If you shoot suppressed you'll appreciate a left handed upper.

I don't have one myself though.

No joke. The only time I wish I had one is when I have a can on the rifle. Other than that, I've never really seen a need for one. I've just always used rifles with an ambi safety, norton mag release and Ranier Raptor charging handle.

John Keystone Accuracy, Robert Whitley @ 6mmar.com, and Lee @ Accurate & Reliable can make you a lefty upper in just about any caliber available. Call them up and they can build exactly what you want.

Because of the gas coming out of the ejector port?

Fyi when the hide moves to scout there will be a lefty forum on Forums - XRifles, lefties unite. It's called wrong handed

I am left eye dominant and shoot from the left shoulder. I have never seen a need for a "left hand" AR. The only complaint I have is the forward assist has opened up my lip on a few occasions when shooting prone sling at 1000 yards on low light days, when, to get enough contrast in sight picture to shoot consistently, I have had to get my eyeball right up on the sight aperture. My aperture is much smaller however than the as issued daylight aperture on a stock AR.

One more thing, in teaching the SDM course, I have observed students that choose to shoot from the left shoulder are not issued special rifles or training, since there is no reason for special training on how to handle the AR from the left shoulder, nor is there any reason for any left hand devices. The rifle is ambidextrous. Some might say it actually accommodates the left hand shooter better than a right hand shooter. That's how I see it.

I think the folks marketing lefty AR's like Stag are exploiting the perceived usefulness of a left handed gun. I don't think the reality of it all has any real benefit. There are however some consequences such as the left handed dust cover, which opens up rather than down, might not open fully when certain sights are mounted to the upper.

I shoot left handed, you really only need an ambi-safety, no need for an ambi-mag release or charging handle (or for that matter you really do not need an ambi-safety).

I looked at the Noveske and that is a nice upper assembly. Thank you for this information. My wife shoots left handed and I already have a suppressor for her, so having the port on the other side is key.

I shoot left handed. They are usable left, but on my AR-15 I added an Ambi selector, charging handle, and Troy Mag Catch along with Phase 5 bolt release. I just think it's easier for me.
On my AR-10, I only have the selector and charging handle. It's shot prone, so I do most everything with my right hand. I'm thinking about the bolt release for it, but not sold yet.

Yes. Keep your mouth closed.

and try to be not breathing in when pulling he trigger! I dont rapid fire to often with my AR's and i shoot them all suppressed (300blk and 223). Just try to keep it slow, keep the mouth closed and no be inhaling right after pulling the trigger!

But honestly as a lefty who shoots a "right handed: ar left handed....if you dont shoot suppressed you shouldnt have an issue. The only issue i have wit mine is from the blowback from firing suppressed.

If you're a lefty and there are companies that make left handed uppers then buy a left handed upper. I have a Stag lefty and shoot it suppressed and not having hot lead and gas cover my face and mouth is very nice. My only complaint, its a petty complaint, is that Stag uppers are just bland looking but they work well. I love the lines of the newer companies out there today like Seekins, Mega and a lot of others. My lefty that I have now is what I use for long range but I want to build another lefty for LR but a nicer looking one. The one I have now I would just use for classes and drills so I don't care if its dropped, scuffed, scraped etc.... My upper sits on a Spikes lower and they mate perfectly well but I have heard that others out there like the Seekins and so forth will pretty much only match up perfectly with the same company lowers. Maybe I am wrong though so if anybody could correct me I would love to know.
