Leica Amplus 6 3-18x44i

I have Visus and Magnus scopes. If it relates pretty equally to the Visus its a great scope. Magnus is in another league though and only about $450 more for a 1.8-12, and can be found used on the PX for a steal. Massive FOV, very bright, good color, great resolution. I got rid of a Magnus a while back and have regretted it ever since.

I have $1200 in Cabelas bucks from the cc so I am using that to get my next hunting scope; also thought about the mk5 3.6-18 with TMR reticle...i have the PR2 reticle but way too fine for hunting purposes. I am still unsure whether I want to go back to SFP or stick with FFP for hunting purposes.

Anyone have experience with these as I am looking to get a new hunting scope? I am undecided on Leupold Vx5/6 and this but I really liking the finer reticle on the Leica.
I have leicas new amplus, i have it on a bergara ridge In 6.5 that i built for my daghters.

i also own a seekins havak with a s&b zenith, 6.5c,M

a savage 110 with s&b klassic 6.5 cm

a noveske apache with nightforce atacr 308

airarms tx200 leupold vx3

cz550 30.06 leupold vx3

i have found myself always grabbing my daughters gun when going to shoot. mostly due to the scope. I just love it, dusk and day light it has top notch glass, unlike my leupolds that i find they add redish tint to everything. The atacr is a better scope for dialing, the amplus seems like its glass is on par with the scmidt benders, but to my eyes my scmidt benders are boring when comparing to the amplus.

amplus scope always returned to zero when adjusting
for loger range or windage, the illuminated reticle i felt is superior to the klassics may e slightly better than the zenith if not equivelent.

i will definitely grab another amplus when they go on sale, the fine line on the reticle, and the fact that my eyes just prefer this scope, i can not recommend enough.

Mine just arrived last week, due to having a storm come through and no power for 3 days and having to clean up a bunch of trees I havent had time to really check it out. Initial impression is I also really like the reticle and clarity is definitely on par or slightly better than my MK5. Appreciate your response.

I just mounted my new Leica Amplus 6. Headed to the range tomorrow. First impressions is elevation turret is crisp. Windage-not so much. Elevation has adjustable zero stop. Unscrew the top -be forewarned-they really put them on tight and loosen the 3 VERY SMALL set screws on a steel ring. The ring has a small nub on the bottom the aligns on it's counterpart on the bottom. Once you butt them together, tighten the set screws and zero stop is set. Windage has a zero stop-you pull up on the plastic shroud disengaging it from the turret and rotate it to zero-then push it back down. The illuminated reticle is useless below the #6 setting- I don't know why they made it so faint you cant see it on settings 1-6. Eye relief not so great at higher power. But the glass is so very nice. Going through the power range is smooth with minimal resistance, and the diopter adjustment is a little loose for my tastes. I'm sure in colder weather it will firm up a bit more. The reticle is very nice-a mix between a target scope and a hunting scope. Weight is very manageable. I would rate this glass on par with my Zeiss HD5 Conquest-the added bonus is the illuminated reticle. I don't think you will regret buying it-I got mine from Sport Optics and as long as you don't mount it in a set of rings, you can return it without a possibly paying a restocking fee. They are great folks. Good luck!

I bought one right after my post and looked through it for a while and agree that it is a quality piece but i didnt want SFP at the end of the day and went with a MK5.

I'm on the fence about getting one of these scopes, but not having a sunshade is kind of a deal breaker for me, as my rifle club/range shoots towards the afternoon sun and I find myself often shooting towards a setting sun in the field.

Has anyone found an aftermarket sun shade or one from a different manufacturer that fits and is the same colour/diameter?

Cheers!
Jack

Ps. This is my first snipers hide post! 😃

I know I'm late to the party, but I bought my Leica Amplus 6 3-18x44i for a hunting build. It is an absolute stunning optic all around. Between the glass, mechanics, size, and weight Leica did very well. I also researched /considered the Trijicon, Leupold vx5 and 6, and briefly the Meopta offerings but the Leica Amplus 6 won out.

I've have found few things that irk me:

1) It's second focal plane. I knew that buying it, and I'm trying to use it and learn to like it. I am NOT a hunter but sfp made more sense to me for a hunting build over ffp. This has more to do with me and my opinion not the optic itself.

2) In the scopes literature nor on the optic, is the magnification (power) to reticle subtentions isn't clearly stated anywhere I can find. I know I CAN figure this out but I shouldn't HAVE to. My old Bushnell elite 4200 had this in the early 2000s. It should be the norm for ANY and ALL scope manufacturers to mark or signify what magnification is correct in relation to the reticle in sfp optics.

3) the illumination. The only part of the reticle that is illuminated is a .125moa dot in the center of the reticle and it's definitely not daylight bright. But this is less of an "irk" than it is something a potential buyer should be made aware of.

4) Parallax knob tension. Every other control on this optic is stellar. The turret and knob tension is spot on and/or tactile. The Parallax knob is a bit too stiff on my example and I'd like to see it with less tension.

Hopefully my opinions and gripes don't sway anyone away from this scope. Overall, the glass is superb and it's incredibly easy to get behind. The tracking has been perfect. I've dialed it out to 500 and back and it returned to zero without issue.
My plan is to have a custom turret made once the optic proves itself and I decide if it's staying on this rifle or my new lightweight build. I have seen the Leupold CDS in action and I think from a hunting standpoint a custom turret is the ticket.
I will try to put this scope next to my friends vx6hd (4-24) and compare them at distance this weekend. I will report back here with an edit after doing an optical performance comparison.
