Smoking deal on these! I paid around $1800 when I bought mine a couple years ago. While the HD version that is replacing these is even better, for the $600-700 or so difference in cost I'd take these in a heartbeat.

As a side note - Outdoorsmans here in Phoenix makes an awesome tripod bracket for these - way simpler & smaller than the goofy tripod mount that Leica makes.

So what does the HD version do that is better. My question is will I really notice it if I didnt get the HD version.

While I agree that range estimation is a valuable and necessary skill to have...if you shoot in any of these Sniper/Tactical matches you almost never have enough time to accurately get within 5% of the correct range...and if you're still all moto shooting the .308 win then you have even more work to do. Shooting fast 6mm's and 6.5's and even 7mm's the range estimation has a little wiggle room.

havin a pair of bino's that also range is pretty slick...I've been dragging my heals joining the 21st century here but I think I might have to bite the bullet and pick a pair of these up. I will wait to see what the other guy's out there using them have to say first...LOL.

Comparing the HD and the non-HD side-by-side I could tell the difference - sharper image in the HD version definitely. To me it'd be worth a couple hundred bucks extra for the HD - but not worth the huge price spread right now due to the closeout on the non-HD version.

Most of my use for the Geovids is for hunting, not matches, and for hunting I consider them one of my better purchases - don't leave home without them.

I have an older version of the Geovids and they are awesome. This is a great price on a great piece of gear. Whoever jumps on these I'm sure they won't be disappointed.

They're claiming about 200 yards further on laser ranging as well. Possibly other things - but they look/feel the same otherwise and those were the two things the Leica made a point of mentioning when I handled the HD ones last Feb.

I guess my question would be:

How do these stack up against the Swarovski Laser Guide (both as a field optic and as a rangefinder)?

I've been considering getting an LRF but don't want to go overboard on price since technology tends to get better or cheaper over time. This deal puts them more in competition with the Swarovski than the Geovid HDs.

I too am interesed in how these compare to the Swaro and Zeiss dedicated LRF's.

I may sell my Lecia 8-42 binos and my brand new Zeiss LRF and buy a pair of these.

Can anyone say for sure if the Geovid offers a superior LRF over the Zeiss or the Swaro?

I haven't done any testing, but in some side-by-side usage at the matches here, the Swaro is probably a bit better in the LRF department. But not so much better that I'd think of buying one, or feel like the Geovids are inadequate. If I was buying an LRF strictly for match use the Swaro might be interesting to me. But for hunting I love the all in one simplicity of the Geovids - they just work, and work well - and I don't want to carry separate binos & LRF (when I did that I rarely used the LRF - and what's the point then).

awhile back i was ready to buy and go home with the geovids. the plan was to cosolidate binos w/laser. when i looked through them compared to the binos only it was noticeably not as bright by 10-15%. i so wanted to buy but could not dismiss that difference. i kept things seperate and bought the swaro 10x42el's.
if you can try before buying that may influnce your purchase also. just my .02 cavet emptor

So you are saying the Geovids are noticeably inferior to standard Leica binos, as far as pure image quality? I have not looked through the Geovids, but have been told they are just as good as straight Leica binos.

I wouldnt want them if the image quality is inferior to my Trinovids.

I am saving my beans for the Zeiss RF, although this Geovid deal is tempting. Have used both and feel the Zeiss is a better product. The Zeiss gives nothing up in the optical department. Leica can be a PITA for warranty as well.

From what I understand, the Geovids, while the image quality is somewhat compromised due to the LRF, will have as good or slightly better overall image/brightness than my Trinovids. I think the image is somewhat compromised compared to UltrVids, but equal to or better than Trinovids.

I have the Trinovids and the image quality is freaking amazing. I have never looked through the Ultravids, so I dont know any better, LOL.

I am getting a pair of Geovids and will sell my Zeiss and Leica individual units to replace with a single unit that does both for my hunting.

I'd keep those trinovids. An extra set is always handy and, as you know, the Trinnys are good stuff. I regret selling mine...just a little.

Those will be great backups. Which RF are you getting?


ETA- For backups, I have a pair of Olympus Magellan EXWP I's in 8x43. I actually won them in one of Dougs contest's. They stay in the truck all the time. Are actually quite impressive bino's for $200.

i found my leica lrf better than the binos/lrf combo. i love their stuff and as i said i really wanted to condense things. it really was that noticeable. go to a cabelas or something and see for yourself. to hear they are going to have a hd version seems like they are aware of the issue.

I had a Leica LRF 1200 and it was a good rangefinder, as long as you didnt need to range past 800-1K yards. It worked well for me. I upgraded it to a Zeiss when I started shooting 338LM, because the Zeiss is supposed to be superior. I have found the Zeiss ranges farther.

That said, from what I have read, the Geovids are supposed to range farther than the LRF 1200. They are rated at 1300, so apparently Leica feels they are superior to the 1200.

ranging capability is most likely on a reflective target of some kind. The Geo's I tried would barely give a reading off a deer at 650 yards. The Zeiss binos went past 1100 on fur, 1300+ on a house.
Guess it depends on your shooting requirements.
I think the Zeiss rangeing device is superior to the Leica from what I have seen. The actual glass in either is top notch.

I havent been able to attempt to range deer with my Zeiss PRF yet. Ranging reflective targets, I do think it is superior to my Leica LRF 1200. I am hoping that the Geovids will be as well. We will see.

As for my requirements, I wont be shooting any deer at 1K, but hope the Geovids will be able to range reflective targets out to its claimed 1300. I will be happy with them if they live up to their claimed yardage. I am just wanting to replace my Leica Trinovids and Zeiss PRF with one unit that can do what those 2 did. From talking to Doug, who has used them all, I believe the Geovids will do that. It will be nice to have a high end pair of binos that also range well.

If you're simply wanting to combine two units into one, I think you'll love the Geovids. If you're looking for a substantially better rangefinder than the Leica 1200 ( or your current Zeiss), I'll bet you're gonna be disappointed. Like most things, the 1,300 yard rating is under ideal circumstances and is for highly reflective targets.

As far as the optics go, I'd put them right along side the Trinovids and slightly below the Ultravids.

That is exactly what I am wanting to do. I want to be able to range reflective targets as far as possible for range use.

Their main use will be hunting binos that can range animals at hunting distances.

If they are as good as my Trinovids, I will be very satisfied.

I wish I could justify the cost as hunting with a LRF bino is much more handy than carrying both bino and LRF and this is a very good deal.

From my experience in the field, the Leica was clearer than the Zeiss and the ranging distance was about the same, up to 1000 yds depending on conditions.

I liked the Zeiss button better than the Leica, just seemed to be easier to press and hold the unit on target but both work fine.

Swaro is the best RF if you just want distance.

I have a set of Swaro's 8X56's and a set of Zeiss 8X40's. I use the Zeiss when I want a lightweight(under 1#). And I use the Swaro's in open country(tough to beat-even by Leica). I thought about buying a set of the ones on sale. But I was discouraged when I looked at the weight of the Leica's(over 2#). I thought the Leica might be a good compromise, but not at a weight of over 2#. I think I will stay with what I have, and just buy the Leica 1200 range finder this winter. I am pretty sure there is going to be a lot more sales on high end optics after Christmas. I think the economy is that bad. Tom.

I don't either but it works okay once you get used to it. Their ability to range really shines in antelope country, ie. sage brush, where you may have to deal with heat, mirage and very dry, unreflective backgrounds that absorb lazers like a sponge.

Yes, the Leica's are a little heavier but I use bino harness so the extra weight is not a problem for me.

I've had a pair of the 8x42 Geovids since they first came out, and as a hunter, I will say they are the best purchase I have made in that time. I would not go in to the woods without them. I went from Swarovski SLC 10x42 after having used them for three years. I would not worry about the glass on the Leicas. I have spent A LOT of time behind both. They are as good as the Swaro SLC's.

After losing a bull elk archery hunting because my rangefinder and binos were tangled up, I bought the Geovids. Ranging capabilities of these binos is very good. 1000 yard readings on a bull elk in decent conditions without a tripod is pretty consistent. I'm sure you could range further more effectively with a tripod.

Just think about your opportunities at trophy-sized animals in the last five years. If you could have sped up your shooting process by ten seconds, how many more successes could you chalk up? With the amount of money I spend on hunting, it doesn't take long to pay for these when you factor in the cost of lost opportunities.

My brother had the Swaro rangefinder. They were great, but if speed is a concern, they were too slow. The Leicas spit out the range instantly while the Swaros take a few seconds. Once again, those few seconds can be the difference between an animal on the ground or in the bush.

If you are a hunter, buy these and don't hesitate. They are an essential tool as far as I am concerned.
