Less Enamored With Tactical Solutions and BDM

Took the Tactical Solutions 22LR out today and had less than stellar performance (probably mostly my fault). I started with a new Black Dog 50 round drum....it went bang, click and proceeded to disappoint all day. It didn't want to cock the action but it would chamber a live round...magazine, trigger, or action?????

I had switched the lower out to one I just bult up with a Geissele Automatics trigger yesterday not sure if this may have been a contributing factor.

I switched to the 26 round BDM mags with the 525 pack Federal Champion ammo and they ran well. I then switched to American Eagle ammo and it ran ok (had a few FTF...ammo issues and they went off when rechambered) in a 26 round mag.

I then went out and shot whistle pigs for a bit....what a blast with the 26 round mags and an Aimpoint M2 using the Federal Champion bulk pack ammo.

I switched to PMC Zapper ammo for a magazine. I had been running the action dry and it gummed up almost immediately. The bolt got so sticky that it would not close. I tore the upper apart and wiped it down but it needed more help....lube would have helped. I finally gave up and went home.

It cleaned up easily once home and cycles well after getting hit with a dose of Rem Oil.

Not sure if the 50 round mags are going to be an issue or if the upper just needed to be cleaned and lubed. I am hoping it is the later. It could be the GA trigger as I understand that the action can be a bit finicky with different triggers. I will take a different lower out next time to see if it makes a difference.

All in all it is a kick in the can and worth messing with to get right. Once the whistle pigs come out in force it will really get a workout.

I have been reading up on belt rigs and plan to order a SO Tech BLoCS Contoured Padded Pistol Belt and dump pouch. Still trying to decide what mag pouches to go with. I have two Fast Mags coming in and have a number of the old GI 3mag pouches to ride me through until I decide. I am thinking that the mags rotated 90 degrees from the old GI pouches would be a better fit???? I really want to get the 50 round drums up and running before Spring but will stock up on 26 rounders if needed.

Lessons learned.....Take lube in the field, (I just remembered that I have an Otis kit in the truck...crap), don't make a bunch of changes all at once (lower, ammo, magazines), stick with the Federal Champion ammo (need to stock-up).

All in all it was still a bunch of fun and the rifle is minute of whistle pig out to 100 yards (if I do my part in the wind

Mt Goat was that the TS dedicated upper or the conversion kit? I run the CMMG kit with Mad Dog 26 round mags and as you found out the only issue I have had is when I run the system really dry. Being able to employ the same set up I carry at work without the cost of 5.56 ammo has been a very successful training tool. I have been thinking of getting the 50 round drum for final protective fire against the zombies. Anyone else have feedback on the 50 round drums?

How accurate is the CMMG conversion kit with in a regular 1/7 or 1/8 twist barrel out to say 50yrds?

It is a dedicated upper.

Michael, thanks for the offer but the seizure was operator error I believe (I ran it too dry). It was actually a good learning experience as I found where the main lubrication points are and where to keep clean if running a bit dry (rails on the bolt assembly as I believe the carrier free floats).

I am headed out wolf hunting with my daughter this morning and taking the AR-22 to give it another go with the drum mags.

The CMMG conversion kit runs pretty good for training purposes but certainly will not win any bullseye competitions. Out of my 10.5" 1:7 upper it typically will shoot 2"-3" groups at 50 yards with bulk pack ammo and seems to feed and shoot the best with Federal target. It does very well for training purposes 25 yards and in with the ability to make center mass and center head shots POA POI. Out at 100 yards it opens up to traditionally over 6" but if you put enough rounds into the target the groups don't look as bad (kinda like generating a shotgun pattern). The kit has been well worth the money. I do try to stay away from the lead bullets and run the plated stuff as this helps with cleaning later on. I run this set up wit my AAC M4 2000 on occasion and have not seen an appreciable difference one way or the other when it comes to accuracy. My 14.5" 1:9 M4 with the kit does shoot a little better. I am ordering some 60gr stuff and will be intersted to see how it shoots out of each gun. Hope this helps.

The infaturation is back on....one 26 round mag, the 50 round drum, then three 25 round mags with no hic-ups. A bit of lube works wonders.

I was trying to make the decision for dedicated upper vers. the CMMg kit... your answer was what I expected really. The 22LR really needs the twist barrel to go with the .22LR round.

I have heard good reports on Spike's Tactical and Tactical Solutions.

I am running a dot sight so the accuracy capability may not be reflected accurately in my results. Inherant aiming inaccuracies with a dot sight come into play.

As far as a 10-22 it would depend upon how much you are putting into it. If you are starting with a $200 rifle and dumping $1500 (new, stock, barrel, "parts enhancements", gun smithing etc etc) into it or something less????
