Rifle Scopes Lets talk about ACOGS

So I have a Acog. And would like to use it on my 18inch upper. Should I be able to shoot about 1 MOA with it. I know it wont get me sub MOA.

Most of my experience is on M4's and 249's. Neither are better than minute of man at best.

i find it quite difficult to get consistent 1 moa groups with any of my M4's with any of my 4X ACOG's. Perhaps a better shot might be able to but imo the ACOG's are not made for precision shooting. I own 4 ACOG's and are great scopes for the task they were designed for. Occasionally with one of my Noveske N4's I can get a 1 moa group sometimes better but it is the exception rather than the rule.

If your weapons are not capable of 1 moa the ACOG will not turn it into a 1 moa one.

It's not going to be easy but if you have the skill and can be consistent you might be close. It's just not enough magnification to really tell if you are aiming at the same exact point every time

People shoot MOA with irons, so it's doable...but this guy doesn't ever pull of MOA groups with his ACOG consistently.

They are good for what they were intended for. A precision optic they are not especially with no way to dial on it. They were made for gun fighting and they are great for that purpose and strong as all hell. That being said 1moa and under groups are possible with a 4 power. In running a vortex pst 1-4 on my ar with hand loads me and my buddy both got 5 shot groups under .2 moa at 100.

I had a TA31F on a S&W M&P15T model. Free floated with the Troy rail. When rested, and if I did my part using M193 I could get 1 1/2" at 100 yards. Not all the time, but often enough. With match grade ammo, a quality gun, and a good shooter I'd say 1" at 100 is very doable.

Ive used both ACOG and the ELCAN in combat. ELCAN is the better optic.

M4's and 249 SAWS. For What shooting we did. (not at people) they worked great. But we had nothing that was precision.

I guess to be more specific. Multiple combat tours in iraq. Used both the ACOG and the ELCAN sights. ELCAN sight was much better, especially since you can go from 1x to 4x, but I have not used the ACOG with RDS mounted on top. I Have used an ELCAN in that configuration. Ive used them on an M4 in combat, and ive gotten to fire the 249, 240, and M2 with all kinds of sights on them in training. I personally feel the ELCAN is the much better sight, especially if you need it for multiple applications. ELCAN also has built in iron sights. ACOG makes great tools, ive used them with great success, but ELCAN if you want top of the line, and multipurpose functionality is the way to go.

I have an ACOG on an SR15. Used it in the field a good bit. Very accurate for it's size. I will shoot it at 200 meters soon and see if sub MOA. It was last time I checked. I have made some longish 350 meter shots on coyotes with it. Would two 5 shot groups confirm accuracy?

I have a difficult time shooting good groups with my ACOG past 100yds. I like more magnification, especially if your talking on an 18" precision gun.

I can shoot 1/3" at 75 yards. At 100 it starts to open up disproportionately. Also, in daylight, I can't do any precision shooting with the horseshoe. It's WAY too bright so I have to use the lower cross hashes or cover the fiber optic part completely. For larger targets (torso sized), it's pretty easy to hit at just about any reasonable distance.

Downrange, I used all. The liked Elcan, EOTech with Flip mount(magnifier)... And ACOG last. Elcan is great but can be finicky. For 2 grand, it shouldn't be. I put a small piece of radiator hose on the swing lever to make it faster to switch from 1-4 and vice versa. Hth

So much confusing advice in this thread...

Anyway, I only use TA01NSN and for what it's designed for, it's a great optic. It's as rugged as they come, and I wouldn't hesitate to take one back downrange. Now, I don't like the horseshoe or the chevron reticles but you shouldn't have a problem shooting sub 1 MOA at 100 yards if your rifle can do it.

I only have a little time behind an Elcan, and I didn't like it much. Just personal preference.

Now, if you aren't having to choose glass out of the arms room, then snag a USO 1-8 or 1.8-10. I have one of each and they're awesome glass. The 1-8 is on my SPR, and the 1.8-10 is on my truck gun. Love them both, and that's all the glass you need for an SPR-ish AR-15.

I have shot some very small groups with both ACOG and Elcan but it's difficult to do it consistently. That shouldn't really be your goal with an ACOG-equipped gun though.

I'm sure it can be done ...... I've had one for about 14-15 yrs and I've not been able to do it consistently, in fact, more times not. I'm smart enough to know my limitations with it or my skill set. Great scope though! I like the idea of not having to turn it on.

Have always run my TA01NSN on a 20" upper and get sub moa groups with 69gr. SMK handloads. Have shot it out past 800 yards with 77gr. SMK loads and got consistent hits on IPSC steel at those ranges. Some of the original 3 gun matches mandated that you run a "military optic" so you pretty much had to run an ACOG or ELCAN. That being said and as mentioned above there are better options out there now. Numerous scopes in the 1 to 4,6,8,10 range are available and do a great job up close and at distance.

For what shooting we did at both people and vehicles, they are fucking awesome. Mostly with 2x acog's on M4's.

It's not an MOA scope, so don't try to use it for one. It was designed with a specific purpose in mind, and it excels at that.

An acog simply enhances the medium range accuracy of a weapon that wasn't designed for moa shooting anyhow.

Once again. Different scopes (tools) are made for different jobs. And every tool does not fit every job.
