I rarely give war flicks a high raating. Same with Clint Eastwood flicks: Though they can be engaging in my opinion usually not truly meritorious. Oliver Stone's Platoon was an exception...so is Letters From Iwo Jima .
This is the battle told from the Japanese side. Done in black and white, never the less excellent, engageing, and deeply touching.
Though we often justify war, this movie is fine testimony to its ultimate futility. As the Brittish philosopher Bertrand Russell said, "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." Watch this one. Availabel on Netflix.
