I am considering sending in a vx2 scope to have m1 elevation and windage knobs installed by Leupold’s custom shop. Have any of you used the custom shop to have any work done and if so how was your experience?

I was a little shocked at the price they quoted me to add the knobs ($225 and a month turnaround) but I would love for this scope to have an easier way to dial for windage and elevation adjustments. I also wonder what the m1 knobs will look like on a 1” tube instead of a 30mm tube like in the old Mark 4’s....

I am wanting to put this scope on a lightweight 6.5 Grendel SBR bolt action I have built on a Howa mini chassis and my number one propiority on this build is weight and I just can’t find a reasonably priced quality alternative to how lightweight the Leupold scopes are (under 12oz for this 4-12x40 AO). The only thing I dislike is the small capped adjustment dials on it.

I just ordered a VX-3i 6.5-20X44mm target scope from the custom shop. I wanted a target dot reticle and that was the only way to get one. It took only a couple of weeks as apposed to the month and a half that was advertised.

Have you considered the SOD dials?
Leupold makes a Screw On Dial that you can install yourself onto your old scope without having to send it in. They are like 50 bucks each? The only thing is you have to call into the custom shop and buy it over the phone, specify if your scope is moa or mil and the zero stop version is limited to one rotation (You can install it a bit high and its a zero bump, you can feel it but are still able to skip over it to get a second revolution). There is a mil and moa version to match what your scope is. I only went with the elevation turret but I think they offer, or at least used to, a windage as well.

(Let me know i these pics dont show so I can fix them)

If you currently have an moa scope and wanted mil turrets then I think thats something that would require you to send in for a retrofit of the internals if you want your clicks to line up with the markings. These SODs are just for adding turrets to something, not really switching anything up.

I would definitely be interested in those but it’s my understanding they only work on the older coin slot adjustable turrets. My scope is only a couple years old and has the newer finger click turrets.

It will work on those, my scope pictured there was a vxIII with the finger adjustments. The black finger click part just pops up like a bottle cap and underneath it is the same core as everything else that these screw into.

This pic of the instructions from new zealand hunting or something has the instructions, in it you can sort of see how it shows the black finger cap popping off

IIt's amazing to me that these have existed for years, yet Leupold doesn't list them ANYWHERE on their website and the only articles about them are years old.

I can see that but I can also see it as driving people to buy a new scope that came with dials which surely brings more bucks. Im just glad someone else posted about them a few years ago right before I sent my scope in for the retrofit.

I called the custom shop about the SOD dials. They do still sell them and they are now $80 each. So it would be $160 for the SOD’s or $225 for the M1 dials. Now to decide which way I want to go...
